Hyundai to offer its all-new Toyota RAV4 rival in ICE, mild-hybrid, full-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants globally A little over a month after revealing the fifth-generation Tucson and its hybrid variant, Hyundai has introduced its plug-in hybrid variant. The all-new Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid is one of the company's most advanced PHEVs, engineered primarily for European markets, which get the fifth-gen model in a short-wheelbase version. The all-new Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid uses an upgraded version of the previous model's powertrain. Under the hood, it has a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine, assisted by P2 and P1 electric motors. A 6-speed automatic transmission and a mechanical all-wheel drive system are standard. In the old powertrain, there was a P0 belt-driven motor for starting the engine and generating electricity, and its belt connection led to frictional losses, while the P2 motor handled propulsion and regenerative braking. The newly added P1 motor replaces the P0 unit. Like the P2 motor, it is integrated into the transmission and eliminates frictional losses associated with the previous belt drive. Besides starting the engine and generating electricity, it can also assist the engine if required. The P1 electric motor's power matches the P0 unit it replaces: 13 kW (17 hp). With 292 PS (288 hp) and 380 Nm of torque, the latest model hits 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. The old model, which packed 288 PS (284 hp) and 379 Nm of torque and was available in FWD and AWD configurations, took 7.5 seconds (FWD)/7.6 seconds (AWD) for the same. The all-new Tucson Plug-in Hybrid is likely slower because of its larger battery pack. Instead of the old model's 13.8 kWh unit, it has a 17.1 kWh unit. While the old model's electric range was 67-70 km (FWD)/63 km (AWD) as per the WLTP test cycle, Hyundai is targeting 81 kilometres for the AWD-only all-new model. Like the old model, it can only be charged via an AC charger, and its peak charging input is also the same: 7.2 kW. Hyundai has yet to reveal the 10-100% charging time, but it should certainly be higher than the old model's 1 hour and 42 minutes. Hyundai has developed the fifth-gen Tucson in short- and long-wheelbase versions, and it will offer the former in Europe. The SWB body is 4,560 mm long (+35 mm), 1,900 mm wide (+35 mm), and 1,670 mm tall (+20 mm) and has a 2,720 mm wheelbase (+40 mm). The LWB body measures 4,700 mm in length (+60 mm), 1,905 mm in width (+40 mm), and 1,685 mm in height (+20 mm), and its wheelbase spans 2,785 mm (+30 mm). The company has no plans to launch its latest global C-SUV in India.
