Toyota’s new upcoming urban compact SUV will be based on the FT-AC concept from 2017 LA Auto Show

Toyota has been working on a new sub-compact urban SUV for quite some time and it seems the latest preview of the upcoming car is the Toyota FT-AC concept that was showcased at 2017 LA Auto Show. Interestingly, this comes as the third preview of the small urban SUV in last several months, as the brand also unveiled FT-4X concept and TJ Cruiser concept previously.

Toyota has seen pretty good response with its range of cars in the global UV market and this is going to be the latest addition in the lineup. it would likely hit the market by 2020 and expect it to be priced competitively. Interestingly, we can hope the car arrives in Indian market as well, considering the Japanese brand’s strategy to increase its strength in the utility vehicle market with more new products and two of its big offerings are its current best sellers.

All the three concept models revealed in past seven months come wearing distinctive styling, but one thing is common there. All of them point towards a compact off-roader. So far, the brand accepts that it has been testing waters in the global market and receiving feedbacks from the customers. In that case, we can see the car coming featuring the design inputs from all the three concepts.

Speaking about the upcoming sub-compact urban SUV, it will be underpinned by the auto major’s TNGA platform. This off-roader could arrive with a dimension close to the India-bound sporty looking C-HR. Toyota reveals that it will be basically a front-wheel drive model, but there will be an AWD version on offer as well.

While Toyota has been emphasising on greener powertrain technology for several of its future models, this upcoming urban sub-compact SUV will likely be powered by an inline-4 cylinder engine. Toyota reportedly said it won’t receive any hybrid powertrain as well but considering the latest trend it might opt for one. Also, this SUV is expected to influence the next generation Toyota SUVs and crossovers.

Recently, while emphasising the launch of next generation Tundra, the company’s North American group vice president and general manager Jack Hollis said the FT-AC concept could eventually go into production, just like the FJ Cruiser which came into existence a couple of years after the concept that received tremendous attention.
