Japanese automaker Toyota is terminating production of the compact SUV FJ Cruiser due to the poor sales figure. The retro looking off-roader was first phased out in the United States a few years ago. The car is still available in Australian market and in Japan as well. But now the Japanese automaker has planned to discontinue the model in all the markets after its 10 years of lifespan.

Introduced as a concept in 2003 at the North American International Auto Show, the retro-looking compact SUV was first launched in 2006. The car has been sold with a 4.0 litre V6 petrol engine under the hood, which has been upgraded throughout its life cycle. The outgoing model in Australian market churns out 270 hp of peak power and 380 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5 speed automatic gearbox and sends the power to all the four wheels. Toyota sold a 2WD version as well as the cheaper variant. In selected markets, the car has been sold with a 6 speed manual transmission.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is based on a cropped version of the Land Cruiser Prado platform and weighs 2,123 kilograms for the All Wheel Drive (AWD) variant with automatic transmission. On the design front, the SUV looks a bit unusual. It sports suicide doors. On the performance front, the off-roading capability is absolutely amazing.
