Tata Blackbird will go on sale in the near future and it could be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine

Tata Motors is reportedly working on an SUV coupe based on the country’s best-selling SUV, the Nexon. The speculations surrounding the project have existed for a long period of time and the Nexon Coupe will continue to sit on the same X1 architecture found in the regular Nexon but it will be modified to suit the requirements of the midsize SUV segment.

The Tata Nexon Coupe will be longer than the sub-4m Nexon as it will likely measure around 4.3 metres and the project was conceived way back in 2018. The Blackbird project has been revived as Tata intends to lock horns with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Nissan Kicks and the soon-launching Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder.

The overall length will likely be increased by stretching the rear overhang while the wheelbase length will be 50 mm longer courtesy of the changes made to the wheel geometry. To have clear differences over the Nexon, the exterior is expected to gain a host of revisions as a redesigned front fascia and rear end are likely while the A-pillars and front doors could be carried over.

It is said to have longer rear doors and a sloping roofline enabling a fastback design with a larger bootspace. The longer rear overhang should aid in improving the rear passengers’ legroom. The ICE version of the Nexon Coupe will likely derive power from a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that could produce a maximum power output of 160 hp.

While the existing 1.2-litre Revotron turbo petrol engine from the Nexon (120 PS and 170 Nm) won’t be used, the 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel engine will be upgraded to generate higher power and torque outputs in the Nexon Coupe and it will also comply with BSVI stage 2 emission standards. Both manual and automatic transmissions could be available.

The homegrown manufacturer has huge plans in terms of electrification and a few months ago, the Avinya and Curvv concepts were unveiled. The Nexon EV is currently the highest-selling passenger EV in India and its range was expanded with the arrival of the Nexon EV Max with a larger battery pack and longer range this year.
