Volvo will launch only electric and hybrid cars in India after 2019; will retail one million EV around world by 2025

Volvo is aiming to become one of the global auto majors in world electric vehicle market. As part of this strategy, the Swedish luxury automaker is gearing up to roll out one million zero emission pure electric vehicles across the globe. India is going to play a crucial role in that strategy and the brand has confirmed it will launch only pure electric and hybrid models in the country after 2019.

Considering the fact that India is thriving to adopt zero emission pure electric mobility across the country by 2030 under the Indian government’s Mission EV 2030 strategy, several auto majors are running to grab a large chunk of the Indian EV market that is about to grow bigger significantly.

Volvo too wants to grab a chunk of that pie. As we have already reported earlier, the luxury auto major has confirmed that it will roll out its first pure electric car in the country by 2020. While zero emission models come much pricier compared to the hybrid models, due to the high cost of battery, Volvo aims to roll out several hybrid models as well.

Under the current tax structure in India that was introduced back in July 2017, hybrid vehicles come drawing much more cess compared to pure emission models. This is why sales of the hybrid vehicles have faced difficulty in recent past. Volvo has pleaded the government to reconsider the cess amount for hybrid vehicles. However, the GST Council is unwilling to do that.
