Tata H7X (Tata Q502) will compete against the likes of Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson; expected to share 170 hp producing 2.0-litre diesel engine

Tata Motors has been banking on the upcoming vehicles as the first iteration of the IMPACT design philosophy has endured appreciable success. Buoyed by the popularity of Tiago, Nexon and Hexa the homegrown automaker is embarking on a new journey with a fresh crop of products that will be unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo in Greater Noida. It makes the brand one of the most sought after compared to the previous edition of the grand motoring bonanza.

Already making attention is the 45X premium hatchback which harbinger the IMAPCT Design 2.0 against the likes of fierce rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. Another huge announcement waiting in thew wings early next month is a brand new premium SUV. It will give birth to two configurations – one is a five-seater and the other one offering seven seats.

Although spied several times earlier, the upcoming premium SUV has hidden under the JLR bodywork but now its authentic design has come to the fore. Wearing camouflage did hide its production body panels but the overall shape of the vehicle is nothing short of being called ‘butch’.

It does remind us of the Toyota RAV4 though especially with the camo disguise. The Tata Q502 has a tall stance, wide wheel arches and big alloy wheels. The bonnet lines are indeed bold and aggressive while the generous windshield and thick pillar could point towards roomy cabin. It shares several structural components with the Land Rover Discovery and its influence can be clearly visualised.

Going by Tata’s tradition, we can expect the Tata H7X to be positioned aggressively in terms of pricing. Amidst sharing platform with its five-seat sibling, the difference in design and road presence between them are largely said to be noticeable.

While the five-seater H5X will compete against the likes of segment-leading Hyundai Creta and the Renault Cpatur, the seven-seater H7X will be more upmarket and will rival the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. It is expected to share the same 2.0-litre diesel engine with the Compass making close to 170 horsepower. The production version of the Q502 is likely to launch in India sometime next year as Tata tries to make statement in whichever segment it competes in.
