The British auto giant looks to replicate the success of the original Freelander with the new crop of small models

Land Rover is said to working on a new segment of SUVs that will expand the number of offerings as well as helping the brand to reach out new customers. The alleged plan is in response to the growing trend of SUVs and crossovers across different price range and Land Rover, predominantly being a worldwide specialist in off-road vehicles, is looking to generate more revenue with new entry-level products.

The British auto giant looks to replicate the success of the original Freelander with the new crop of small models and it has been reported that they will have styling influence from the icon itself which attained best-selling status in Europe after its debut in 1997. We can presume that these models will be positioned below the Jaguar E-Pace.

Going by the history, we can expect Land Rover to implement its authentic off-roading abilities on to the baby SUVs. According to internet reports, the first of the new lot will be introduced in 2021 and it will have a total length of around 4.2 metres. There will be three different SUVs pertaining to the nature of customers they are targetting at. One will be as distinctive as the Discover Sport.

The second will be a luxury hardcore utilitarian just as the next generation Defender and the last SUV will be focussed on luring luxury-based customers just like the Range Rover. It is yet unsure which of the three models will enter production first but they are almost certain to be in the horizon.

It has been speculated that the smaller SUV will be positioned below the Discovery Sport filling an apparent gap that currently exists and it is likely to be based on a re-worked architecture of Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar E-Pace.

The Freelander could be revived for the baby SUV as well but ahead of its appearance, Land Rover is all pumped to drop in an overhauled Defender. Considering the importance JLR gives to India, we can expect the baby SUVs to become the least expensive models within the range if/when they arrive.
