India Will be Export Hub for 1.6L Honda Diesel Engine

Honda Cars India will fully assemble the 1.6-litre diesel engine at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan; export to begin from July 2017

Honda Cars India to export the 1.6-litre diesel engine for the first time and with this India is ready to become the global export hub from the particular motor. The Japanese auto manufacturer will fully assemble the engine at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan and export will commence from July this year, when the company ships the motor to Thailand.

This is the first time, Honda Car India will be making the complete 1.6-litre diesel engine in the country as currently the automaker doesn’t offer any product with this specific diesel engine in the domestic market. Initially the 1.6-litre diesel engine will be exported to Thailand where the company has a strong market share as well as a large manufacturing plant for various vehicle platforms.

Reason behind Thailand being the first market to get the 1.6L diesel engine from India is that this country has a wide range of Honda products with need for higher displacement diesel motors. At later stage, the company could ship the engine to several other global markets as well. The shipping destinations would include markets like Philippines, Japan, North America, South America, Europe and couple of other South East Asian markets and this will surely boost the country’s ‘Make in India’ campaign as well.

Interestingly, Tapukara plant in Rajasthan that will produce and export the specific fuel burner is also the largest exporter of manual transmissions for the brand in the world. Not only that, this is the largest production plant for Honda’s manual gearboxes and diesel engines.

Currently, Honda Car India’s Tapukara plant manufactures 1.8 lakh of engines per year including the 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre petrol motors along with the 1.5-litre diesel motor. Around 450 units of motors comprising all three engines roll out from the assembly line every day. But, the assembly line has a capacity to roll out 670 engines regularly. Now, with the 1.6-litre diesel engine that void will be utilized.
