Only 60% recalled cars in India fixed; Central government is making the recalling and fixing of defective vehicles mandatory in the country

Indian government is making it mandatory for the auto manufacturers to fix the defective vehicles in the country. The new rule will force the vehicle manufacturers to recall the defective vehicle and fix it, also to replace if needed. The automakers present in India have started recalling and fixing the faults in the respective vehicles in 2012. In these four years more than 2.2 million vehicles have been recalled in the country.

While these recalls were made as voluntarily, the picture at the end is grim. The reports suggest only 50% – 60% vehicles are fixed after being recalled. A large number of unfixed vehicles are from commercial segment. While the passenger cars have been easier to fix, the commercial vehicles are not.

Most of the large commercial vehicles present in the country are pretty old. Therefore fixing is a problem for these vehicles. Moreover, the owners of these don’t send the vehicles for fixing out of fear. A repair may end up loss in business ends up unfixed vehicles. Therefore the larger picture says, a vast number of vehicles running on Indian roads are not actually in best shape.

In recent times, several automobile manufacturers present in Indian market issued voluntary recalls. While a large number of vehicles were recalled to fix the faulty air bag inflators, some were recalled to fix the defective brakes. Like the rest of the world Indian market has also seen the recall to fix the emission issues. Among two wheelers Royal Enfield issued a recall program for their Himalayan motorcycle to fix the engine issues.
