15Hyundai sub-4 metre Compact SUV:
Hyundai Creta is one of the best selling models in its class but the Korean manufacturer doesn’t have a sub four metre SUV to fight against Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon. Hyundai is developing an all-new compact SUV for India market. The sub four-metre SUV will be the production model of the Carlino concept shown at 2016 Auto Expo. The design of compact SUV will be boxy and different from other SUVs in the Hyundai lineup.
We can expect some design influence to come from Kona SUV, which was revealed last year. Hyundai is tight-lipped about details of compact SUV. We haven’t seen the production model yet on the road so the development is still in its early day.
The interior design of compact SUV will be upmarket and comes with lots of features like touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, projector headlamps, DRLs, cruise control, rain sensing wiper and more. The company will also focus on interior space as most of the compact SUV offers just adequate space only and if they could give class-leading space it could be a big USP.
According to some earlier reports, Hyundai compact SUV will be powered by turbocharged petrol engine. This engine comes from European i20 model as they are offering 1.0 L 3 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine in two outputs – 100 PS and 120 PS.

We are expecting 120 PS variant to be launched in India and it is mated to 6-speed manual gearbox. The diesel engine will be 1.4 L unit from i20. The Korean manufacturer is also working on an AMT transmission exclusive for India and we can expect Hyundai to offer AMT transmission with either diesel or petrol engines. We can expect Hyundai to introduce the compact SUV in India by 2019.
