Volvo XC90 T8 is the first hybrid luxury SUV to steal power from other cars including Audi, BMW and Jeep on a California highway
The new Volvo XC90 T8 is a luxury SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain under the hood from the Swedish luxury automaker. Interestingly, it gets energy from other cars as well. To show how it can get the much needed electric energy from other cars Volvo has released a new video, which shows, how the automaker set up a car charging station at side of a California highway and how the passing cars generated hydraulic energy for the Volvo XC90 T8.
The place where the charging station was set up had a rubber mat placed on top of several water filled tubes, and those were put on the highway. While the other cars were passing over the mat unsuspectingly, the water was forced through the tubes and finally into a pump which was converting the kinetic energy into electricity. The generated electric energy was then sent to the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Hybrid model parked there.
Very interestingly, every time a car was passing over the mat an electronic board was flashing thank you messages to the cars, identifying each car according to their make and colour. The entire process shows how the car can gain energy for running without using extra fossil fuel, and it also makes the XC90 the first car ever to be powered by other cars.
Volvo has been known for their unique and unmatchable innovations when it comes to automotive safety solution features. Now the Swedish luxury automaker claims their new generation XC90 will be the cleanest and most powerful SUV. The petrol engine in the Volvo XC90 is a 2.0 litre four cylinder supercharged and turbocharged Drive E engine, which comes combined with an electric motor, while the transmission duty is done by an eight speed automatic gearbox.
The petrol engine delivers power to the front wheels while the electric motor sends power to the rear wheels. The petrol unit can churn out 318 hp peak power and 400 Nm peak torque. The electric motor on the other hand generates 82 hp peak power and 240 Nm peak torque. The combined power output stands at 400 hp and the torque amount stands at 640 Nm. This car can reach 0 -100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds.
