Volkswagen Taigun compact SUV production plans scratched; deemed too small to be a sub-four metre product

Volkswagen has decided to cancel the production of the much looked-forward compact SUV known as Taigun. The German manufacturer says Taigun has a smaller proportion and it resulted in the abandoning of any hopes of production. It gave a glimpse into the first ever sub four metre SUV from the stable and it could go up against the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3 and the likes.

As for the Indian market, its has been a disappointment but there are much more going beyond what meets the eye as Volkswagen are in the process of developing a sub-compact SUV for the lucrative segment that’s been led by Mahindra TUV300 as of for now and ahead of Ford EcoSport which set the benchmark in the first place.

Other manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki venturing into the sub-4m segment at the end of next month through the highly anticipated Vitara Brezza and the Tata Motors with the Nexon slated to arrive at the showrooms probably by the end of this year or at the beginning of 2017. The involvement of more automotive brands has come as no surprise and the volume segment is here to stay for a long time with more interests have been shown from other companies thanks to the largely growing customer base in our domestic market.

The reports of Volkswagen having developing a Polo premium hatchback derived SUV is another healthy prospect as far as the momentous growth of the sub-compact segment is concerned as the hatchback has already won over many hearts in its current span. Some speculations goes on to say that the Volkswagen mini SUV will be previewed via concept model at the forthcoming 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March.

Stretching at less than four metres long, it could be rolled off the production lines for the Indian market in 2018 with deliveries expected to commence in the same year. The Taigun, which made its global premiere at the 2012 Brazilian Auto Show, was aimed at the volume space in the growing markets worldwide and based on a flexible platform to suit the needs of particular market.

It made Indian debut at the 12th edition of the Indian Auto Expo in 2014 and sparked a potential sub-compact SUV but with its being shelved the new generation Tiguan premium SUV will be the only torch bearer for Volkswagen that will be pitted against Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Hyundai Santa Fe, etc.
