Volkswagen - Auto China 2019

The SMV Concept is the biggest model currently underpinned by MQB platform and it comes with 2.0 L TSI and 2.5 L VR6 with 7-speed DSG gearbox

Volkswagen SMV Concept made its global debut at the on-going Auto Shanghai 2019. The SUV segment is so popular in China and Volkswagen is planning to capitalise on this rush as they are going to expand the SUV lineup with more models in coming months. According to the company, the share of SUV is expected to rise by 40 per cent.

The company showcased 5 new SUVs at the event and among them, four models including SMV Concept are completely new. Most of these models look more like the production model rather a concept, which the company likes to call them. The production model of the SMV Concept is expected to be introduced in China later this year.

The SMV Concept measures 5.1 m in length and the wheelbase of the full-size SUV is over 3 metres, which is really big and it is based on the MQB modular platform of Volkswagen. The SMV Concept production model will be the biggest model based on the MQB platform as it is bigger than Atlas or Teramount.

The SUV doesn’t look bulky even though dimensions suggest that it is really big, thanks to the design theme. The SMV Concept design took inspirations from other models like the Tiguan and Atlas as the front gets full LED headlamps with a LED bar connecting both headlamps and a black finish grille with VW logo in the middle.

The mirrors are mounted on the door instead of the A-pillar as the company has given this design for most of the models revealed at the Auto Shanghai. The SUV comes with black plastic cladding around the body, which will protect the lower portion and two shoulder lines as the one starts from the front and ends in the middle where the next one starts.

The rear is the most beautiful part of the design as the tail lamps are LEDs and they are both connected. The company has given quad exhaust and a big reflector integrated into the bumper. The engine options include 2.0 L TSI or 2.5L VR6 as the latter produces 295 hp and 368 NM, mated to 7-speed DSG and four-wheel drive system.
