Volkswagen’s new electric SUV replaces the ID.4 and ID.5 in its EV lineup, bringing a more conventional SUV design, a redesigned cabin and multiple battery and motor options

Volkswagen has given its electric SUV lineup a new face, and this time, it has picked a familiar name. Meet the ID. Tiguan, an all-electric SUV that will succeed the ID.4 and ID.5 in Volkswagen’s global lineup. The new model is scheduled to reach European markets in early 2027, with the company banking on a more recognisable name, improved cabin quality and a more practical design to broaden its appeal.

The ID. Tiguan also addresses one of the biggest complaints about Volkswagen’s earlier electric cars: the over-reliance on touch-sensitive controls. The new SUV brings back physical buttons for key functions, including climate control and volume adjustment. The ID. Tiguan adopts Volkswagen’s latest ‘Pure Positive’ design language, with a cleaner front fascia, prominent LED lighting and a more upright SUV stance. Its proportions are intended to give it greater road presence than the ID.4, while retaining the compact electric SUV format.

The cabin gets a complete redesign. A 10-inch digital instrument display sits ahead of the driver, while a 15-inch touchscreen handles infotainment. An optional 12-inch display for the front passenger is also available. Volkswagen has focused on improving material quality, with upgraded upholstery and trim intended to give the cabin a more premium feel. Other available features include a panoramic sunroof, massaging and ventilated front seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system. The SUV also gets a front storage compartment, or frunk, adding some practicality to the electric package.

Volkswagen will offer the ID. Tiguan with multiple powertrain configurations. The entry-level version gets a 58 kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor producing 188 hp. A more powerful rear-wheel-drive variant develops 282hp and uses a larger 77 kWh battery. The range-topping all-wheel-drive version produces up to 299 PS, with power sent to both axles. Volkswagen claims a maximum driving range of up to 600 km on the WLTP cycle, depending on the configuration. Actual range will vary with the battery, drivetrain, weather and driving conditions.

The new EV also gets one-pedal driving, Connected Travel Assist with traffic-light recognition and vehicle-to-load functionality. It can tow up to two tonnes, adding a useful capability for buyers who need more than a city-focused electric SUV. The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in early 2027. It will be offered alongside the conventionally powered Tiguan, rather than replacing the petrol, diesel and hybrid model carrying the same name.

Volkswagen has not announced a timeline for an India launch. For now, the ID. Tiguan is primarily a global-market product, and its arrival in India will depend on the company’s plans for its electric vehicle portfolio here.
