Volkswagen Ameo will be Available in Petrol Variant Initially

Volkswagen’s first India spec compact sedan is expected to hit the showrooms in July

Volkswagen Ameo has been making headlines since it first came in light. The German automaker’s first made in India and made for India compact sedan Ameo was displayed at the New Delhi Auto Expo 2016 earlier this year in February. It was speculated that the car will be launched in both petrol and diesel variants. Now Autocar India reports, that the Volkswagen Ameo will be Available in Petrol Variant initially.

The petrol engine will be a 1.2 litre three cylinder MPI engine which will be paired with a 5 speed manual transmission and churn out 75 bhp of peak power and 110 Nm of peak torque. Earlier the speculation was that the car might get 1.2 litre TSI petrol unit mated to a 7 speed DSG automatic gearbox. But as it seems, the TSI engine will be available in Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and the Volkswagen Vento TSI only.

Coming to the diesel variant of the Volkswagen Ameo the compact sedan, it will come later in form of a 1.5 litre EA 189 series four cylinder TDI engine. Incidentally, this is the engine which has been at the centre of emission scandal issue. The TDI engine under the hood of Ameo will come with an update with a new turbocharger. The diesel variants will be available with 5 speed manual and 7 speed DSG automatic gearbox options.

Built on the VW Polo platform the Volkswagen Ameo gets a sharp front fascia with crisp headlamps, sleek front grille wide fog lamps, slated air intake, sharp character lines. The rear profile gets sharp cuts and creases. The interior of the car looks upmarket with multifunction steering wheel, dual analog and a TFT display consisting instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system.

The Volkswagen Ameo is expected to enter the production at the automaker’s Chakan plant in a few weeks. The car would hit the showrooms during July. Being the latest entrant in the highly competitive compact sedan segment the Volkswagen Ameo will take on the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Ford Figo Aspire, Hyundai Xcent and Honda Amaze. Expect the car to get price tags ranging between Rs. 5 lakh to 8.5 lakh.
