Tata Motors is coming out of its conventional designs and producing some truly bold and exciting looking products. In recent times, we have seen the brand launched products like Tiago, Hexa and lastly the Tigor. Currently, it is working on its upcoming flagship SUV, named as the Tata Harrier. The SUV is going to implement a completely different design philosophy than the brand’s old design theme. It will be heavily inspired by and share components with the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
The Tata Harrier design team has taken several inputs from the Land Rover engineers. It is certainly going to be a next level product in the homegrown auto major’s portfolio. It was also showcased at the 2018 New Delhi Auto Expo in concept form. The Tata Harrier will be based on the same L550 lightweight platform, on which the Discovery Sport is based. The test mule of the SUV has been spotted disguised as the Discovery Sport, which gives clear indication about component-sharing strategy.
The lightweight L550 platform will not only reduce the weight of the Harrier, but it will also increase the handling capacity of the vehicle without reducing its rigidity. Interestingly, this is going to be the first Tata Motors vehicle that will be based on any Land Rover car. This strategy also indicates that Tata is aiming the global market with this upcoming SUV alongside the domestic market. Apart from the platform, there will be several components borrowed from the Discovery Sport.
Also, Tata Harrier is expected to be sharing several elements with its sibling the Tata Hexa. Expect the company’s much-appreciated IMPACT design language to be implemented in the upcoming SUV. It would sport sharp headlamps with projector units and integrated LED daytime running lights. The front grille is likely to come with inspiration from Land Rover Discovery Sport. It will also get sporty alloy wheels and sleek character lines. Inside the cabin, it would be very upmarket and features packed and will borrow several elements from the Tata Hexa.
The power source for the Tata Harrier is expected to be a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre Multijet-II diesel engine instead of Land Rover Discovery Sport’s 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine. On the transmission front, it would get a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic unit as well. Expect it to deliver impressive fuel efficiency and it will compete against Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
