Toyota has made its presence felt at the 2018 GIIAS with a host of new vehicles and one that grabbed our attention for being unique is the factory-modified Fortuner with TRD kit. Developed by Toyota Indonesia’s TRD division, it wears the Japanese brand’s signature motorsport livery, red and white, that can also be seen in their WEC and WRC operations more famously.

It looks jumbo courtesy of the raised suspension and a huge skid plate enabling the vibe of Dakar rally machine or dune bashers found in the Middle East.
However, it is the competitor in the grueling Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) with stripped out interior, endurance suspension and roll cage, and appears completely different to the stock Fortuner TRD edition for tacking different surface conditions. In India, the base Fortuner is priced at Rs. 26.64 lakh and it goes up to Rs. 32.43 lakh for the range-topping variant (ex-showroom).
The GD series 2.8 litre diesel engine pumps out 174 bhp of power at 3,400 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm while the manual versions are 30 Nm less torquier. It has mileage of 14.24 kmpl (MT) & 12.9 kmpl (AT) and six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters does the duty with a six-speed manual as standard. Toyota offers both 2WD and 4WD options on the Fortuner.
The 2.7-litre four-cylinder Dual VVTi petrol makes 164 bhp at 5,200 rpm and 245 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm with 10.01 kmpl (MT) & 10.26 kmpl (AT) claimed mileage figures. The powertrain is connected to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters with 2WD as standard. The Fortuner is retailed in seven paint schemes White Pearl, Silver, Gray, Attitude Black, Nebula Blue, Phantom Brown and Avant-grade Bronze. T
Based on the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform with high off-roading characteristics, the Fortuner has an imposing exterior with V-shaped grille, LED projector headlamps, slanting roof and muscular wheel arches. The interior boasts large colour TFT LCD display, automatic climate control system, eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, steering wheel with mounted controls, off-road modes, etc.
