Tata Motors prepares for ramped up production as next-gen Nexon, Avinya, Sierra EV and Safari EV will be part of the next set of launches

Tata Motors has reportedly asked suppliers to prepare for passenger vehicle production of as many as 1 lakh units every month from FY28 – a big increase over its present scale. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility started production at the former Ford plant in Sanand in January 2024 after the facility was retooled in around 12 months for existing and future products.

Ranjangaon is also becoming more significant through Tata’s relationship with Stellantis, as a future Jeep SUV, internally referred to as J1J, is planned around Tata’s Sierra-derived ARGOS architecture. ICE and electric versions are expected along with left-hand drive derivatives for overseas markets and the Stellantis’ facility will undergo preparation for the project.

One of Tata’s busiest development programmes is the next generation Nexon reportedly known internally as Garud. Spy shots show a boxier body, squarer A-pillar, flatter roof, more upright rear section and a noticeably angular rear windscreen. It may also get different alloy wheel design, pull-type door handles, a central touchscreen, four-spoke steering wheel, revised physical climate controls and an electronic parking brake.

Petrol, diesel, CNG and electric versions will more likely continue. The more premium Avinya range has also been under development for quite some time. Tata appears to have moved away from the earlier JLR EMA plan and is now evaluating hardware linked to the Chery-JLR E0X/Freelander EV architecture. An Exeed Sterra ET has already been spotted in India as a development mule for the underlying platform.

The Avinya X, internally referred to as P2, is expected to become the first production model from the family as the earlier P1 concept now seems to sit lower on Tata’s immediate development priorities. The Safari EV seven-seater will occupy another important part of Tata’s electric portfolio. Current reports point to single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor AWD configurations borrowed from the Harrier EV.

Tata has also been linked to next-gen Harrier and Safari projects known as Taurus and Leo. Hybrid and range extender applications are also under study with speculations pointing towards possible range-extender SUVs in the future. Tata plans to take its passenger vehicle portfolio to around 15 nameplates by the end of the decade – backed by six new nameplates and more than 20 product revisions.

Electric vehicles are targeted to account for over 30 per cent of passenger vehicle sales by FY31. Financially, Tata Motors plans expenditure of around Rs. 37,500 crore to Rs. 40,000 crore between FY27 and FY31 as yearly PV sales head towards more than 12 lakh units. Its manufacturing capacity is expected to approach 13 lakh vehicles as well.
