Suzuki Alto Works revealed for Japanese market; priced at Rs. 8.29 lakh

The Japanese auto maker has come up with a driver-oriented, performance version of its Alto small hatchback to satisfy the needs of enthusiast in its home land. Revealed at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and suitably dubbed as the Alto Works, the little hatch is powered by a 660cc inline three-cylinder petrol engine that’s turbocharged to develop 64hp of power at 6,000 rpm and 74 lb-ft of peak torque at 3,000 rpm.

It is coupled with a standard five-speed short-throw shifter manual transmission driving the front wheels. Customers can opt for a five-speed Auto Gear Shift (AGS) gearbox transmitting power in the top-of-the-range variants with optional ALLGRIP 4WD system.

This power unit was first utilised in the Alto Turbo RS version and it was tuned to produce the same power figure but four torques less than the Alto Works. One cannot be particularly excited about the tiny engine’s performance but dig deep into the details before coming to a premature conclusion.

The Suzuki Alto Works tips the weighing scale at around 610kg, as touchscreen infotainment system has been eliminated to trim weight, and has a wheelbase of just 2,460mm with five doors. In the account of encouraging driving experience, the three-cylinder engine has been re-configured for better throttle response whilst modifications were done to the steering rack as well.

The pocket rocket also features re-tuned suspension from KYB alongside model-specific 15-inch gloss black alloy wheels with multi-spoke rims, sporty instrument cluster, large airdam, leather-wrapped steering, chrome bezels on headlamps, fog lamps, sill extensions and decals above rocker panels.

It measures about 3,395 mm in length; 1,475 mm in width; 1,500 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm. Buyers have the ability to choose from either white, red, silver or black colour. The Suzuki Alto Works model will have red front brake calipers and sporty Recaro race-inspired bucket seats for passengers up front.

Other interior features are a boost gauge, very contrast red seat stitching, faux carbon fiber trim, red stitches on gear lever and steel pedals. The Suzuki Alto Works has been retailed at a starting price of 1,509,840 yen (Rs. 8.29lakh). It has a 27-litre fuel tank and can return a mileage of 23.6 kmpl for the five-speed automatic 2WD variant.
