NGT Ban Stays On 10-Year Old Diesel Vehicles In Delhi-NCR

NGT Ban Stays On Diesel Vehicles

NGT says one diesel vehicle causes pollution equivalent to 24 petrol vehicles or 40 CNG vehicles

National Green Tribunal (NGT) has refused to withdraw ban on 10-year old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR. The tribunal dismissed central government’s plea to modify the previous order banning the decade old diesel vehicles in the national capital region. NGT says one diesel vehicle emits pollutant equivalent to 24 petrol vehicles or 40 CNG vehicles.

NGT also said in its ruling that the emissions from the diesel vehicle are carcinogenic and it cleared that the tribunal won’t modify the previous judgement. The bench also said that a similar plea has been denied by Supreme Court as well. Earlier on 7th April 2015, NGT ruled that diesel vehicles older than 10 years won’t be allowed to ply in Delhi-NCR, where pollution level is alarmingly high.

The diesel vehicles have been accused as the prime source for the high air pollution level in Delhi. Several measures have been taken in past to reduce the pollution level there by the Supreme Court and Delhi government as well. While Delhi government implemented odd-even rule in multiple phases, the apex court banned the registration of diesel car with 2.0-litre or larger engines.

The diesel powered taxis were also banned for a period from plying in Delhi and NCR. However, now with NGT’s stay on the order of ban on 10 year old diesel vehicles, it is expected that several owners will face trouble as the tribunal has asked Delhi RTO to deregister these vehicles.

The ban on 10 year old diesel powered vehicles is something the NGT has been mulling for quite some time to implement in other large cities across the country. However, that is yet to be announced. Now, with this decision sales of petrol powered vehicles in Delhi-NCR are expected to be increased. Apart from that, hybrid and electric cars are also likely to see an increase in sales.
