After staying out of action for almost 8 years, renowned Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi Motors is contemplating a comeback in the mainstream segments of the Indian car market. Right now, the company is contemplating the introduction of the Maruti Ertiga rival in the Indian market.

Speaking on the sidelines of the new Outlander’s India launch. Uttam Bose, Managing Director, Mitsubishi India said that his company will focus on SUVs and crossovers for the future model line-up. He even said that the company is considering bringing the Mitsubishi Eclipse crossover and Xpander crossover-ish MPV to India.

The Mitsubishi Xpander is a mid-size SUV that rivals the Suzuki Ertiga in the South East Asian markets. It has a crossover-ish design and the MPV offers as many as 7 seats. It comes with many premium features, including LED headlamps, LED taillamps, touchscreen infotainment unit, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The MPV has a very SUV-like ground clearance of 205 mm, which should be appreciated by the Indian buyers. It measures 4475 mm in length, 1750 mm in width and 1700 mm in height. In comparison, the Suzuki Ertiga measures 4,296 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height.

Powering the Mitsubishi Xpander is a 1.5-litre DOHC petrol engine that features Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) technology. It produces a maximum power of 105 bhp and a peak torque of 141 Nm. The engine is available with two transmission options – five-speed manual and four-speed automatic. The Xpander MPV offers ABS, EBD, Dual front airbags, Stability Control, and Emergency Stop Signal system.

The launch of the Mitsubishi Xpander MPV, as per Uttam Bose, is at least a year away from us. The MPV won’t launch before late 2019 or early 2020. Prices are expected to start at Rs 7 lakh. If launched here, the MPV will rival the upcoming new-generation Maruti Ertiga and the Mahindra Marazzo.
