Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell shows the future of mobility; runs on both fuel cell and battery

Like many other global auto majors, German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz too is working on environment friendly futuristic powertrains. The brand has displayed the GLC F-Cell at the 2017 Frankfurt Moto Show. The pre-production version of the GLC Fuel Cell SUV previews the upcoming eco-friendly model that is to hit the market soon. Interestingly, it will be able to run on fuel cell technology and on all-electric powertrain drawing energy from battery as well.

The SUV arrives as a plug-in hybrid model with a hydrogen fuel cell and battery pack instead of an internal combustion engine. The GLC F-Cell’s powertrain is capable of churning out a total power output of 197 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. Mercedes-Benz claims that this vehicle will be able to run 437 km.

The Mercedes-Benz F-Cell carries 4.4 kg of hydrogen fuel on board in two carbon fibre tanks. It appears reminding us about the B-Class F-Cell. However, the GLC F-Cell’s fuel cell is 30% smaller than B-Class F-Cell and it is 40% more powerful as well. Speaking about the battery pack, the GLC F-Cell gets a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion that is capable of delivering 49 km of running range on a single charge.

As the brand claims, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell can choose from one of the two powertrain systems. In terms of design, the GLC F-Cell appears similar to the regular model. Only differences visible at exterior are the F-Cell badge and the Blue accents at different places hinting towards the eco-friendly character of the vehicle.
