Mercedes-AMG Uncovers E53 Coupe And Cabriolet In Detroit

Mercedes-AMG E53 models share the same 3.0-litre inline-six engine as the CLS 53; comes as more powerful options to the E43 version

Mercedes has uncovered its much awaited AMG 53 lineup at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show. The lineup presently comprises models like CLS 53 along with E53 coupe and convertible. All these AMG 53 models come much more powerful compared to the AMG 43 cars and less expensive compared to the AMG 63 versions. This move certainly enriches the German luxury car manufacturer’s AMG lineup.

Speaking about the Mercedes-AMG E53 coupe and cabriolet, both the models share similar styling elements and identical tweaks over the standard model in order to achieve high performance capability. The fluid looking headlamps appear similar as the regular E-Class sedan. They get projector lamps with integrated flowing pattern LED daytime running lights.

Front grille gets chrome trim highlighting the entire shape. Apart from that, there is horizontal chrome finished sleek slats running through the middle with the brand logo sitting at the middle. The front bumper comes with sculpted look, thanks to the large horizontally slated air dams at both ends and a wide central air intake with black mesh.

The long hood of the Mercedes-AMG E53 coupe and cabriolet come with sharp and sleek creases enhancing its visual style further. Moving to the side profile, both Mercedes-AMG E53 coupe and cabriolet get sporty and large wheels, subtle character lines running through the two doors. Entire glass area comes with a sleek chrome trim at the bottom.

Moving to the back, there are wide and sleek wraparound LED taillights. The sculpted protruding bumper and quad round shaped exhaust pipes enhance boldness and appeal of the cars. So far, Mercedes-AMG has tweaked the design with little touches all around the exterior and made the cars very appealing.

Not only exterior, inside the cabin as well they get carbon fibre trims at the dashboard adding zing, while the brown leather and red trims contrasting with black theme enhance appeal further. Both the coupe and the cabriolet feature special door sills.

Coming to the most interesting part of these two cars, they both share same 3.0-litre inline-six engine with the CLS 53. This engine is capable of churning out 429 hp of peak power and 520 Nm of peak torque. Added to that, the cars get 21 hp power output and 250 Nm torque output from a 48 volt electric motor. Clearly, the E-Class outperforms AMG E43 sedan. Transmission duty is done by AMG Speedshift 9-speed automatic gearbox with paddleshifter. Power is sent to all the four wheels through the car’s AMG 4Matic AWD system.

Interestingly, this is the first time Mercedes-Benz is offering a full AMG version of the E-Class coupe and cabriolet. Both these cars are expected to be launched later this year and they could arrive in Indian market as well.
