The new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has the Tata Tiago as one of its main rivals and here is how they compare

Maruti Suzuki officially launched the new Wagon R in India at Rs. 4.19 Lakh (Ex-Showroom) and it is going to compete against Tata Tiago, which is one of the consistent performers in its segment. In this article, we are comparing the dimension, design, features, engine and price between both these models to find out which is better.

The third generation Wagon R measures 3655 mm in length, 1620 mm in width, 1675 mm in height and wheelbase at 2435 mm. The Tiago, on the other hand, measures 3746 mm in length, 1647 mm in width, 1535 mm in height and wheelbase at 2400 mm. In terms of dimension, the Tiago is longer and wider but the Wagon R is taller and has 35 mm more wheelbase. The boot space of Wagon R is 341 Litres compared to 242 Litres of Tiago.

The Wagon R is based on the new Heartect platform, which helps it to lower the weight as the new model tips the scale at just 805 kg compared 1080 kg of Tiago.  The fuel tank capacity of Wagon R is 32 litres while the Tiago comes with a 35-litre fuel tank. The top end variant of Tiago comes with 15-inch wheels while lower spec models get 14-inch but the Wagon R comes with only 13 and 14-inch wheels. Tata also offers alloy wheels which the Wagon R misses out.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R vs Tata Tiago Design Comparison

Maruti Suzuki continued the tall boy design theme from earlier Wagon R as it is one of the trademarks of the hatchback. The front gets new grille along with redesigned headlamps and a new bumper with integrated fog lamp. The side design is simple and the C-pillar gets a black finish, which gives a sporty appeal for the Wagon R. The rear gets new vertical tail lamps with a new bumper. Overall, it’s a simple design theme and appeals to the targeted customers.

The Tiago has been in the market for some time now but the design theme still looks fresh. The front gets projector headlamps on the top end model with chrome surrounding on the fog lamps. The top end variant gets 15-inch alloy wheels and it gives a muscular look for Tiago. The rear is one of the most attractive parts of the design. In terms of design, both models are completely different as one is a tall boy while others get conventional hatchback design.

Maruti has given an all-new design for the dashboard with black colour on top and beige colour for the rest of the dashboard. The Wagon R also gets a new three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and redesigned instrument cluster, which also come with a MID. The interior design of Tiago is different to the Wagon R as it gives a sense of spacious cabin with a black finish for the dashboard. The instrument cluster design is conventional like MID in the middle with tachometer and speedometer.

The top end variant of both models come loaded with features like electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, multi-function steering wheel, four-door power windows, 7-inch touch screen infotainment system but Tata Motors is not offering Apple CarPlay while Wagon R offers both. But the Tiago offer more features like climate control, four speakers with two tweeter audio system, alloy wheels and projector headlamps.

Both models get driver side airbag as standard while the passenger airbag is optional. The Wagon R also offers ABS with EBD, front seat-belt reminder, door ajar warning and rear parking sensors as standard. The Tiago offers more comfort features but the Wagon R pulls back in the safety features as Maruti offer more of them as standard rather than only on the top end variant like the Tiago.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R vs Tata Tiago Engine Comparison

Maruti Suzuki is offering the Wagon R with two engine options. The entry-level 1.0 L K10B series engine produces 67.8 PS of power at 5,500 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. The 1.2 L K12M puts out 82.94 PS at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm at 4,200 rpm. Both these engines are mated to a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox.

Tata Tiago is available in both petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2 L Revotron engine produces 85 hp at 6,000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. The 1.05 L Revotorq diesel engine puts out 70 PS at 4,000 rpm and 140 Nm between 1,800-3,000 rpm.

The petrol engines come with 5-speed manual and AMT while the diesel engine gets a manual gearbox only. Tata Motors also offers a performance variant of Tiago which produces more than 110 hp. The Tiago produces more power and torque compared to Wagon R 1.0 L and 1.2 L engines.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R vs Tata Tiago Mileage Comparison

The 1.2 L engine on Wagon R returns 21.5 Kmpl and 22.5 Kmpl for 1.0 L engine, both of them are lower than the 23.84 Kmpl of the Tiago petrol engine and diesel return 27.28 kmpl. The Tiago offers better efficiency than the Wagon R.

The entry-level petrol model of Tigao price starts at Rs. 3.39 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 5.64 lakh for the top end petrol variant. The diesel is priced between Rs. 4.20 lakh and Rs. 6.38 lakh.

The entry-level variant of Wagon starts at Rs. 4.19 lakh which is Rs. 80,000 more than Tiago. The top end ZXi AMT is priced at Rs. 5.69 lakh and it is also Rs. 5,000 more than the Tiago. In term of value, the Tiago is better but the Wagon R offers more standard safety features but on the comfort features on top end models it’s the other way around.
