Maruti Suzuki setting up industrial training institute as it marks the start of Japanese government’s skill development program for manufacturing in India

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to set-up a first-of-its kind industrial training institute in India. Named as the Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing (JIM), it will be located at Mehsana in Gujarat. The institute will start working in August next year and it will train around 300 youths per year in technical training and Japanese shopfloor practices.

The Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing also marks the start of Japanese government’s skill development program for manufacturing in the country. The institute is the result of collaboration between Governments of India and Japan and it aims to train 30,000 youths in next 10 years.

The JIM will be run and managed by the India’s largest auto manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) as a corporate social responsibility. The automaker has committed to initially invest Rs. 3.2 crore to set-up the JIM. The curriculum of JIM is developed in Japan and apart from technical curriculum, this institute will also give the youths training in best shopfloor practices.

The JIM will offer seven technical courses, which are Fitter, Electrician, Welder, Mechanic Diesel, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Mechanic Auto Body repair and Mechanic Auto Body Painting. After completion of course successful trainees will receive certificate and approval from the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT).

Speaking about the initiative Mr. Kenichi Ayukawa, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of MSIL has said that, Maruti Suzuki’s Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing (JIM) in Mehsana will take forward the vision of the two governments, to create a pool of skilled manpower in manufacturing in India. He also described this program as Maruti Suzuki’s participation in Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ initiatives.
