KTM Freeride E-XC is the electric version of Freeride 250R; available in limited number under a pilot program

KTM has launched the Freeride E-XC electric off-roading bike in the US market. It will be available in select dealerships and in limited number under its pilot program. The bike is an electric version of the Austrian high-performance bike manufacturer’s Freeride 250R model. It comes priced at $8,299 (Rs. 5,32,506), which is $300 (Rs. 19,249) premium over the standard Freeride 250R.

The electric bike was previously available in European markets along with the E-SX. The bike manufacturer has been working on this electric off-roading bike for last four years. It draws energy from an electric motor that is coupled with a 260V, 2.6 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The KTM Freeride E-XC is capable of kicking out 22 hp of peak power at 4,500 rpm and 42 Nm of peak torque generated from 0 rpm.

KTM claims that despite being powered by an electric powertrain, the Freeride E-XC delivers high performance just as the brand’s conventional fuel powered models. It comes with three different riding modes that are Economy, Standard and Advanced. The powertrain generates power depending on different riding modes. This bike comes sans clutch lever and the lever positioned at the left works as the rear brake lever.

The bike manufacture claims the lithium-ion battery needs 80 minutes to get fully charged. This bike is built on a steel-aluminium composite frame which is lightweight and pretty rigid at the same time. For braking duty, it gets a 260 mm front disc brake and 230 mm rear disc brake. Suspension duty is done by 43 mm WP USD front forks and WP PDS shock absorber at rear.

Dimensionally, this 108 kg weighing bike comes with a ground clearance of 320 mm. Currently the bike manufacturer is selling this model under the pilot program to better understand the level of customer interest in the electric motorcycles. If it gets positive response, we might see serial production of the KTM Freeride E-XC. As India is gearing up to adopt all-electric mobility by 2030, we might see launch of electric bikes in near future and KTM could be one of the brands to bring electric powered high performance bikes here.
