Following the Compass launched in 2017 and Meridian launched in 2022, upcoming midsize SUV to be Jeep’s third model manufactured in India

Jeep is working on four new models for India, including a midsize SUV (codename: JLJ) based on the ARGOS platform that underpins the all-new Tata Sierra. While the platform will be shared, overall Jeep’s product is likely to be considerably different from the Tata Motors’ model.

Platform-sharing in the Indian car market has mostly been about rebadged or lightly redesigned models. However, preliminary details about Jeep’s upcoming midsize SUV that have surfaced on the web in recent months indicate the company is considering much greater differentiation to ensure the model stays true to the brand.

Along with the platform, the powertrains, suspension, and other key components will be shared, but that’s where Jeep appears to be drawing the line. The Jeep JLJ is likely to get a distinctive top hat, design elements, and cabin. The seat design and many of the interior features are also expected to be different from the Tata Sierra. Jeep is using the Renegade, which was being evaluated for India in the first generation, and the Compass as benchmarks for the project.

While the JLJ will be an India-focused model, it will also be exported, and Jeep is not looking at this merely as an extension of the programme into other right-hand-drive countries. The company is also evaluating a left-hand-drive version, which suggests a broader export strategy to help capacity utilisation. Instead of sourcing it from Tata Motors’ Sanand plant, where the Sierra is made, Jeep is likely to build it at the Fiat India Automobiles Ltd (FIAL) JV plant in Ranjangaon.

Jeep plans to offer the JLJ in ICE and pure electric variants, both likely with optional AWD capability. The company will likely calibrate the powertrains differently to suit the model’s weight and target customers’ preferences. Given the high focus on exports, Jeep may also work on making the vehicle safer and ensuring better build quality.

Tata Sierra

The India-focused Jeep midsize SUV is likely to be launched in the first half of 2028. Besides Tata Motors’ all-new Sierra, it will compete with the Hyundai Creta, the Kia Seltos, Renault Duster, Nissan Tekton, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and Honda Elevate.
