Jeep Compass SUV derives power from 1.4L petrol and 2.0L diesel engines; will carry a highly competitive price range with signature American butch styling
The famed American SUV manufacturer officially stepped into the Indian market with the launch of the Wrangler Unlimited, Grand Cherokee and its SRT performance version. Although FCA took enough time to introduce the brand, the price tags each model has been quoted with raised eyebrows. However, all the skepticism vanished this year as the more conventional and realistic Jeep Compass SUV was unveiled for the Indian market. Its market entry has been scheduled for August and ahead of which an astonishing number of 1,000 pre-bookings have been made in just three days.
The second-gen Jeep Compass project will bring India into the heart of its production as the whole investment FCA has made is not just for the local marketplace. The FCA’s Ranjagaon plant, known for its heavy localisation of engines and supply to different manufacturers, will act as a major manufacturing centre for export of Compass to 36 international markets out of 100 countries FCA have planned to sell the SUV – that is more than a third of destined markets to receive Compass shipped from India.
It includes developed markets like Australia, Japan and UK while New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and Indonesia are on the list as well. The highly versatile Compass consists of 50 different trims and colours. Apart from India-spec powertrains, the engines offered are 2.0-litre Tigershark petrol, 2.4-litre Tigershark MultiAir2 petrol and 1.6-litre MultiJet diesel.
Jeep put the months of speculations and contemplation of the spy images to rest when the all-new Compass global SUV debuted at the end of last September with a stunning response globally and is the top-prioritised sales driver for the brand. It is a compact vehicle that will act as the cheapest alternative to the Grand Cherokee currently offered with a SRT-spec massive 6.4L Hemi V8 and normal 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engines in India. Here is everything you need to know about the India-spec Jeep Compass SUV:

For India, the Jeep Compass derives power from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged Multijet II diesel motor which is good enough for 167 bhp and 350 Nm peak torque. The same engine will likely feature in the Q501 SUV of Tata Motors in the near future and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
This engine will be available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations while a nine-speed automatic might be offered later. FCA will be cautious in finding the sweet spot between performance and fuel economy of this SUV which has enough bits to do serious off-roading as well. We expect the overall mileage of the smaller 1.4-litre petrol motor to be around 12 kmpl while the diesel could be tuned to return around 16 kmpl.

With a rugged appeal, the Jeep Compass SUV has tapered headlamps, prominent signature seven-slated Jeep grille and aggressive front bumper with fog lamps.
A large set of alloy wheels reside beneath the squared off wheel arches. The side profile has strict character lines while the horizontal tail lamp cluster with LED lights, integrated roof spoiler and a dual exhaust system enhance the overall presence.
