The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is expected to launch internationally next year, and it will be available with a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain
Japanese car giant Toyota is currently working on the next-generation version of the Fortuner SUV. The new model is expected to launch next year, first in Thailand, then steadily in select other markets around the world. The next-generation Toyota Fortuner will make its way to India as well, likely a few months after its global debut.
Speculations about Toyota planning to electrify the Fortuner SUV have been floating around for a while, but now, we have a few concrete details about it. As per a recent report from Thailand, the next-generation Toyota Fortuner will get a mild-hybrid system with its 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The power output was not revealed though.
The mild-hybrid system would boost the torque output during heavy acceleration, and it will consist of regenerative braking as well, along with an idle start/stop system. This would help reduce fuel consumption significantly compared to the current-gen model, while also improving the overall performance. The report makes no mention of the petrol powertrain; Toyota Fortuner isn’t available with a petrol engine option in Thailand, and that won’t change with the new-gen model.
The next-generation Toyota Fortuner has not been spied yet, so its design remains a complete mystery for now. The new-gen model is could be larger in dimensions than the current-gen model, with better interior space on offer. It will likely be better equipped than the existing version, with a much more premium cabin design.
We expect spy pictures of the next-generation Toyota Fortuner to emerge online in the coming months. We’ll have a better idea of the design and dimension changes then. The current-gen model is available in different versions – standard version, Legender, GR Sport – and the next-gen model will likely have multiple versions as well.
In the Indian market, Toyota Fortuner is currently priced from Rs. 31.79 lakh to Rs. 48.43 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The next-gen model is expected to be even more expensive, and it will continue to rival the likes of MG Gloster, Mahindra Alturas G4, and Isuzu MU-X.
