The next generation Toyota Corolla sedan will sit on lighter TNGA platform and have increased interior room for occupants

Toyota has released a new teaser video with tagline ‘A new era for Corolla’ indicating the new generation Corolla in sedan, hatchback and estate body styles by showcasing their silhouettes and outlines of the side profile. The next-gen Corolla sedan, which we are more interest in, will officially premiere on the press day of the 2018 Guangzhou International Auto Show on November 16.

It will make its world debut alongside China-bound Levin that is nothing but the more upmarket version of the actual Corolla. We have discussed about the upcoming sedan several times in the past and here is a complete recap of the 2019 Corolla that could enter India in the later part of next year and could even spawn a rebadged cousin from Maruti Suzuki under the strategic partnership.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla sedan will share the flexible TNGA architecture with the latest Corolla hatchback released globally earlier this year with a striking exterior. It will also share powertrain options with the hatch and estate in some markets while we can expect the existing engines to be carried forward with BSVI compliance when it goes on sale locally.

In countries like US, the 12th generation Corolla sedan should use the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 168 hp and 210 Nm – connected to either six-speed manual or optional CVT with paddle shifters. The presence of new platform meant the upcoming Corolla will have increased interior space for occupants and lowered kerb weight.

Due to the lighter platform, we can expect better fuel economy and improved handling characteristics. It will certainly draw plenty of design inspiration from the Corolla hatchback with sportier styling cues, new sweeping bonnet structure, more aggressive front bumper, trapezoidal grille assembly, a compact rear end and so on.

The interior will also get a suite of new features along with more standard equipment level from the P Sense package in some markets. It should get features like multi-way adjustable powered seats, large touchscreen infotainment system, TFT coloured multi-info display, automatic climate control system, wireless charging, etc.
