Honda BRV (BR-V) India11

Honda Cars India sales slumped by 26 percent, 9,954 units were sold against 13,431 in May 2016

Honda Cars India has endured 26 per cent drop in sales last month as 9,954 units were sold against 13,431 examples delivered in the same time the previous year. The Japanese auto giant is having a tough tenure in the domestic market which is reflected by the YoY decline of products across its entire range.

Honda launched the BR-V SUV in earlier May in a hope to get back some of the lost market share and at the end of the month, the company managed to sell 2,344 units. It is a good initial phase for the seven-seater SUV but will it sustain the momentum or fall back as its siblings in the line-up is yet to be seen.

The Honda City sedan is still the best-seller for the brand in the market as 3,305 units were retailed in May 2016 but it endured 56 per cent sales drop in comparison to the same period last year as 7,562 units were sold in that time. Same applies with the Amaze compact sedan, which created a promising buzz when launched and was tipped to be the Dzire beater, as only 1,409 delivers were made at a YoY slump of 62 per cent. Here’s the sales comparison of May 2016 against May 2015 and the percentage difference:

Model May 2016 Sales
Honda Amaze -62%
Honda Brio -74%
Honda City -56%
Honda Mobilio -90%

The Mobilio family carrier was the worst hit product in Honda’s car lineage as a mere 126 units were sold all throughout India last month. It is 90 per cent down against 1,249 units encountered in May 2015. Honda’s only small car in the entry-level space is the Brio hatchback.

While the popularity among customers is still there for the compact hatchback segment as evident with the consistent moving of main rival Hyundai Grand i10, the Honda Brio recorded a drastic de-growth of 74 per cent. The total units sold last month stood at 228 which is more than 600 down when compared to same period in 2015. The Honda Jazz premium hatchback is also having testing times despite key competitors Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20 registering 10,000 units each on average every month.
