The stricter Global NCAP crash test norms resulted in a low 2-star rating for the Amaze as compared to the 4 stars as per the previous GNCAP protocols
Global NCAP conducted the crash test of the Honda Amaze as per its latest stringent protocols and the sub-4-meter sedan scored 2 stars for adult and 0 stars for child occupant protection. The compact sedan was tested under the previous Global NCAP protocols achieving four stars for adult and 1 star for child occupant protection. The made-in-India Amaze was used in this crash test which is currently sold in South Africa and India.
The previous crash test of the Honda Amaze was conducted in the year 2019 and it managed to score 4 stars for adult and 1 star for child occupant protection. As per the latest test result, the sub-4-meter sedan scored 27.85 points out of a total of 34 points for adult occupant protection, resulting in a 2-star crash test rating. On the other hand, the child occupant protection score stood at 8.58 points out of the maximum 49 score which resulted in a disappointing 0 star.
Talking about the details, the protection offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good, while the driver’s and passenger’s chest showed adequate protection. The driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection. The footwell area and bodyshell were rated as stable and capable of withstanding further loadings.
The side impact test showed good protection for the head and pelvis while marginal protection can be observed for the chest. The side pole impact test was not conducted due non the availability of side head protection even as optional. It is important to note that the Amaze gets only 2 front airbags across the range and it also lacks ESC as standard equipment. Furthermore, the unit tested in this crash test only had seat belt reminder for the driver. However, the Honda Amaze has gained seat belt reminders for all passengers as standard after a recent update.
As per Global NCAP, child protection showed head contact in the frontal impact for both dummies, high loadings in the chest and neck of the three-year-old child and ejection risk in the 1.5-year-old dummies. The lack of three-point belts in all seating positions and passenger airbags disconnection switch as well as the failure of some CRSs in installation explain the zero stars for child occupant protection. Adult protection scored low because of the lack of optional side head protection, driver-only Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) and ESC is not standard.
Responding to the Global NCAP’s latest crash test report, Honda Cars India Limited in an official statement said, “The South Africa spec 2nd Generation Amaze has already been tested as 4 star by GNCAP in 2019. The latest test basis new protocol shows that the total score is of 5-star level. However, mainly due to the requirement of certain equipment like Electronic Stability Control and Side Curtain Airbags, it resulted in a lower rating.”
