2020 Mahindra Thar will more likely make global debut at the Auto Expo next February alongside the new-gen Scorpio

Mahindra & Mahindra created a cult following for the Thar due to its versatile off-roading nature over nearly the last decade. The Thar has been in production since 2010 and it remains largely unchanged in its appearance and the equipment being offered. However, due to the stricter emission norms and crash tests regulations, the off-roader is finally getting a huge makeover.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to make global debut along with the new generation Scorpio at the upcoming Auto Expo in Greater Noida next February. The test prototypes of the second generation Thar have already appeared on the internet several times over the last months and we brought you some exclusive images too to give a clear idea of what is in store.

The biggest change is in the proportions as the 2020 Mahindra Thar has grown larger allowing for more occupant space while being able to provide multiple seating configurations. It will likely have an expansive range with hard- and soft-top variants in the offing. The latest set of spy shots shown here tells you all the information we know so far.

The exterior remains true to the outgoing model as the signature multi-slat vertical front grille, tall pillars and rounded headlamps have been retained. The forthcoming Thar has a wider and more upright stance alongside bigger wheel arches and sturdy high-set bonnet structure. Mahindra should have made structural changes to make it comply with pedestrian safety standards.

The rear continued to have vertical tail lamps. The largest passenger UV manufacturer in the country will sell the all-new Thar with different seating configurations as well while the interior is given a comprehensive overhaul with increased premium features. It has a new dash, steering wheel and centre console, seats with additional bolstering and bigger multi-info display.

Moreover, four power window buttons as seen in the spy shots, fabric seats, dual airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, high-speed alert, front seatbelt reminder, reversing sensors and camera, a large touchscreen in the top-end variants should be part of the package. The four power window switches on the three-door hardtop Thar means that the rear glass area is also adjustable electrically.

It is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine making 140 PS and 320 Nm, connected to a six-speed low range MT with four-wheel-drive transfer case.
