Renault aims to boost its India sales with Captur SUV during festive season; expects significantly major share in SUV segment

Renault is betting big on the Captur SUV to boost its slowing sales in the Indian market. The French auto major is especially expecting a big boost during this festive season. While the auto major experienced pretty good response from the domestic market with its products like Duster and Kwid, the sales have been slowing down in recent times. To boost it, the company is relying on its latest product Captur.

But, the question is, will the Captur be able to perform up to Renault’s expectation? The company is projecting it as a premium product, just like the Captur SUV that is on offer in European markets. But, despite having similar name and identical design, the India-spec model is different under the skin altogether. While the European Captur has been responsible for several accolades since its debut there, the Captur we got for India is not exactly the same as it is based on Duster to keep production costs in check.

For instance, the Captur misses out on several features that have become very common for even the products positioned in lower segment as well. These include the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay enabled touchscreen infotainment system. The material quality used inside the Captur is not impressive too. There is no 60:40 split seats that are available in major number of SUVs. Considering the fact that new age Indian buyers look for premium package with such features, Renault might find some questions rising at them.

The Captur comes based on the same platform as the Renault Duster and is likely to be priced between Rs. 11 lakh and Rs. 15 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). It may not find the path smooth considering the fact there are several well equipped and powerful cars in the same price range in SUV segment. These include the popular products like Mahindra XUV500 and Hyundai Creta. The Tata Hexa too comes within the same price range and it has already garnered pretty much attention and positive response from the buyers.

Speaking about Renault expectation on Captur, the brand hopes the SUV will bring in incremental sales volume of 20,000 – 25,000 units in 2018. It aims strong double digit growth with this new SUV in its portfolio. However, the company is tight lipped on any specific target for the Captur.
