1. Renault Kwid – 25.17 Km/l

Renault Kwid is one of the most efficient hatchbacks in its segment and it is powered by 0.8 L and 1.0 L engines. The 799 cc engine produces 54 bhp of power at 5,678 rpm and 72 Nm of torque 4,386 rpm. The 1.0 L engine puts out 67 bhp at 5,500 rpm and 91 Nm of torque at 4,250 rpm.

These engines are mated to 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and AMT only with 1.0 L engine. According to ARAI, the 0.8 L variant of Kwid returns 25.17 Km/l compared to 24.04 km/l for the manual variant of 1.0 L and 23.01 L km/l for the AMT. The Kwid price starts at Rs. 2.66 Lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 4.63 lakh (Ex-Showroom).

2. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 – 24.07 Km/l

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is the best selling model in its class and the entry-level hatchback is always popular for its frugal engine. According to ARAI, the Alto 800 returns 24.7 Km/l and it is powered by 796 cc 3 cylinder petrol engine producing 48 bhp of power at 6,000 rpm and 69 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. This engine is mated to 5-speed manual gearbox and the entry-level model price starts at Rs. 2.62 lakh (Ex-Showroom) and the top end model is priced at Rs. 3.89 lakh (Ex-Showroom).

3. Tata Tiago – 23.84 Km/l

The Tiago is the most popular product from Tata Motors in India and it is available in both petrol and diesel engines. In this article, we are considering the petrol engine, which is a newly developed 1.2 three-cylinder unit producing 84 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 114 Nm at 3,500 rpm.

This engine is mated to both manual and AMT gearbox. According to ARAI, the petrol engine delivers 23.84 km/l. The Tiago come with so many features like touch screen infotainment system, climate control, 15-inch alloy wheels, electronically controlled exterior mirrors and more. The Tiago is priced between Rs. 3.39 lakh and Rs. 6.49 lakh (Ex-Showroom).

4. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – 22.5 Km/l

Maruti Suzuki officially introduced the new generation of Wagon R earlier this week. The new model is based on the Heartect platform and it is lighter than the outgoing model. The Wagon R comes with two engines – 1.0 L K-series with 67 bhp and 1.2 L K12B engine with 82 bhp. Both these engines are mated to a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options.

According to ARAI, the 1.0 L engine on Wagon R returns 22.5 Km/l and 21.5 Km/l with the 1.2 L unit. Maruti has given lots of safety features as standard on Wagon R. The new Wagon entry-level model priced at Rs. 4.18 lakh and the top end model at Rs. 5.69 lakh (Ex-Showroom).

5. Hyundai Santro – 20.3 Km/l

Hyundai introduced the new Santro last year and the initial response for the hatchback is really good. The Santro is powered by 1.1 L petrol engine producing 68 bhp and 99 Nm, this engine is mated to both manual and AMT gearbox. According to ARAI, the Santro returns 20.3 Km/l.

The hatchback is based on the revised platform of Grand i10 and the design of new hatchback took some inspirations from Grand i10.
