The fourth-generation Mahindra Scorpio will go on sale sometime next year and it will use a brand new 2.0-litre diesel engine

Mahindra & Mahindra will be launching the next generation Scorpio next year and it could debut at the 2020 Auto Expo. A few weeks ago, the first set of spy pictures of what has been codenamed Z101 appeared on the interweb. Spotted again in Tamil Nadu, the test mules give more details about the hidden design elements.

The fourth generation Mahindra Scorpio will comply with the upcoming crash test regulations while offering a range of safety features. The exterior changes have taken a progressive approach with redesigned multi-slat front grille and the latest pictures suggest that the upcoming Scorpio could have newly designed wraparound LED tail lamps.

The unit slightly extends out of the bodywork and the tailgate structure appears to be new as well. The 2020 Scorpio will retain its existing silhouette as the tall pillars and nearly flat roofline will avail loads of interior room. However, the increase in proportions can also be observed and it should enable generous space inside the cabin.

The next-gen Scorpio is based on an updated ladder frame construction and the complete design can only be seen when the prototypes evolve into using production-based parts. The existing 2.2-litre mHawk diesel will likely be ditched in favour of an all-new lighter 2.0-litre diesel engine complying to BSVI standards.

It is expected to produce a maximum power output of 160 horsepower and the torque output will exceed 320 Nm of the current model. It will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission, as standard while an automatic unit could be up for grabs in the top-end variants with four-wheel drive system as an option.

The new Scorpio is the second Mahindra vehicle conceptualised by the brand’s North American technical centre in Detroit, Michigan. The development and engineering duties will be handled by Mahindra Research Valley near Chennai. The interior is expected to be more upscale than the outgoing model in response to the latest rivals.
