Tata Motors recently launched its latest offering in Indian market, the Tigor compact sedan that has grabbed everyone’s attention with the very stylish and unique design and upmarket features. Tata Tigor bears several similarities in design with its hatchback sibling Tiago. The front fascia appears very much identical with the sharp laid back headlamps, a smiling pattern front grille with black honeycomb mesh and chrome trim. The front bumper appears little different from the Kite-5 we saw at the 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo. At the rear, the car gets a stubby look, but it catches attention easily. Apart from the short overhang, it sports a roof spoiler with LED stop lamp, wraparound taillights and a chrome strip between them. The rear bumper too adds zing to the compact sedan. So far, the car appears sporty with the unusual fastback design and stylish and the home grown automaker has designed it keeping the global market in focus.

A common thing between the Tata Tigor and new Maruti Suzuki Dzire is that they both share design elements with their respective hatchback siblings. The 2017 Maruti Dzire carries several similarities with its hatchback sibling Swift. It sports sharp new headlamp with integrated LED daytime running lights. The front grille appears completely new and larger than the previous model. There is a new refreshed looking front bumper as well.

At the side profile, the new Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes wearing sporty alloy wheels, sleek character lines, blackened glass area. Despite speculation of a floating roof design with updated C pillar and relocation of the rear passenger door handle, it appears conventional looking. Moving to the rear of the compact sedan, the Maruti Dzire gets wraparound taillights and a thick horizontal chrome bar running between the taillights. A chunky looking rear bumper is there as well.

In terms of design comparison, both the cars appear very fresh looking and exciting indeed. The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes sporting an upmarket guise compared to the current model. Tata Tigor compact sedan comes measuring 3,992 mm in length, 1,677 mm in width and 1,537 mm in height. It sports a wheelbase of 2,450 mm and despite coming with a very short overhang at the back, the car offers a generous 421-litre of boot space thanks to Tata’s clever design strategy.

The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes measuring 3,995 mm of length, 1,735 mm of width, 1,515 mm of height and it also comes with a wheelbase of 2,450 mm. The Tigor compact sedan too comes following the same strategy. It offers the customers a feel of premiumness without making a hole in their pockets.

The compact sedan gets a multi-function steering wheel, dual-pod instrument cluster with analog dials and digital MID. The centre console features a Harman developed 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the 8-speaker Harman audio system is something that enahnces its premium appeal further. The piano black finishing at the centre console and the dashboard has been copied from the Tiago hatchback. In terms of space and comfort, the compact sedan offers quite spacious and impressive experience to the occupants.

Talking about the interior of the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire, it has become more upmarket and more interesting compared to its predecessor. The Indo-Japanese automaker has introduced superior quality material in seat and upholstery of the cabin of the all-new Dzire. Apart from that, it comes with a flat-bottom sporty three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with mounted buttons, twin-pod instrument cluster comprising both analog dials and digital MID. The centre console gets a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Tata Tigor vs 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire – Powertrain

Tata Tigor is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine is the same 1.2-litre Revotron unit works under the hood of Tata Tiago hatchback. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and churns out 85 PS of peak power at 6,000 rpm and 114 Nm of peak torque at 3,500 rpm.

On the diesel front too, the Tata Tigor shares its engine with the Tiago hatch. Doing the duty is a 1.05-litre Revotorq unit paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. This engine is capable of churning out 70 PS of peak power at 4,000 rpm and 140 Nm of peak torque from 1,800 rpm. It returns 22 kmpl and 26 kmpl of fuel efficiency for the petrol and diesel model respectively.

On the other side, the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire appears with both petrol and diesel engine options like its predecessor. It retains the same 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel unit from the old Swift Dzire. Apart from that, the new Maruti Dzire could get a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine and SHVS technology could be introduced to the diesel variant, but that would be available in future, not now. An in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine is also on card, which could replace the current 1.3-litre unit at later stage.

Power and torque output of the new Maruti Dzire comes similar to the previous model. On the transmission front too, it retains the same setup like the old model, which include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed AT for the petrol, while the diesel gets an AGS alongside the 5-speed MT.

The petrol engine is capable of churning out 84.3 PS of peak power at 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The diesel engine generates 75 PS of peak power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of peak torque from 2,000 rpm. The 2017 Swift Dzire to return fuel efficiency of 22 kmpl (Petrol MT), 22 kmpl (Petrol AMT) and 28.4 kmpl (Diesel MT and AMT).

Both the compact sedans appear with marginally different power and torque output. A 4-speed AT with petrol engine puts the Dzire ahead than its rival, as demands for automatic transmission is rising among Indian buyers. On the other hand, the diesel AGS of Maruti Dzire gives it edge over the Tigor diesel’s manual only appearance.

Tata Tigor vs 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire – Safety

Tata Tigor comes with advanced safety features. It gets dual-front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Cornering Stability Control (CSC), rear parking camera and sensor. Apart from that, the structural rigidity is also pretty good.

The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire also comes with good amount of safety features like dual front airbags and ABS with EBD as standard across all the variants. It also gets reverse parking camera, ISOFIX mounts, engine immobilizer etc. Therefore, in terms of safety both the car come pretty impressive.

Tata Tigor vs 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire – Price

The Tata Tigor comes very competitively priced to catch attention and a good share in the segment. It is priced between Rs. 4.70 lakh and Rs. 7.09 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The new Maruti Suzuki Dzire on the other hand is priced between Rs. 5.45 lakh and Rs. 9.41 lakh. (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

While the new Maruti Suzuki Dzire looks very impressive with its refreshed appearance and upmarket features, the recently launched Tigor sedan from Tata Motors is capable of throwing tough challenge to it. The Tigor offers a very stylish fastback design alongside upmarket features as well. Additionally, the powertrain and performance figures are very close to the Dzire. The safety features on offer are also very similar but the biggest difference is the pricing.

While the Tata Tigor’s top-end variant is available at around Rs. 7 lakh, its rival’s pricing is around Rs. 9.5 lakh. This is certainly going to play a major role for the customers, while choosing between these two models as high-end models are selling in abundance as buyers want their cars to be stuffed with features.

While Maruti Suzuki is a trusted brand name, the positive response of both the brands will help in eking out maximum customers. Tata Motors too did have a successful outing last year due to the bestselling Tiago hatchback. Now, being based on that car and sharing several elements with the hatchback will surely help the Tigor.
