The 2018 Honda Gold Wing is more powerful and significantly lighter with slimmed down body; gets electrically-adjustable wind screen and has 180 kmph top speed
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. has today announced that the bookings for the new 2018 Gold Wing have commenced in India and it comes with a starting price of Rs. 26.85 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi). Buyers can choose between two variants namely Gold Wing and the Gold wing Tour in glossy Candy Ardent Red colour. Customers can order the brand new Gold Wing at Honda’s exclusive Wing World sales and service outlets in Delhi and Mumbai. Deliveries are scheduled to begin this New Year on first come first serve basis.
The 2018 Honda Gold Wing made its global premiere on October 24 at the Tokyo Motor Show and it was one of the most sought-after bikes in the exhibition. Since the first Gold Wing was introduced in 1975, the GL name was more influencing but as years passed on, several new contenders from BMW, Harley-Davidson and Indian arrived to take its crown.
The new Gold Wing looks to get back to its past glory with thoroughly improved mechanicals assisted by a feature and tech-rich package. Globally, the new Gold Wing has been offered in five different variants across two distinct versions. Currently, the touring-spec version is called as the Gold Wing while the bagger is the F6B.
For next year, this is changing as the swapping in names meant the bagger will be the 2018 Gold Wing with no top box and the fully-loaded touring model is christened as the Gold Wing Tour. The Gold Wing with bagger style comes in two variants: one is a DCT-equipped dual-clutch semi-automatic version and the other without it. They will be referred to as the GL1800B and GL1800BD respectively.
The Gold Wing Tour, on the other hand, features three trims internationally. The entry-level model, called GL1800, has manual gearbox while the mid-spec GL1800D has DCT and the range-topping GL1800DA gains DCT with airbag. Despite five different variants, the 1,833 cc flat-six engine will be used in all with no peak power difference as 126 PS will be produced.
The engine has one added displacement but other revisions led to it developing 8 PS more than the outgoing model amidst being able to meet the stricter Euro4 emission standards. Although the power increase is relatively small, Honda is expected to have made performance gains significantly due to the reduction in weight. The GL1800 Gold Wing Tour weighs a massive 42 kilos lesser than the current Gold Wing at kerb weight of 379 kg.
The GL1800B Gold Wing with no top box is 14 kilos lighter than the Grand Wing Tour which puts it 27 kg less weight compared to the current F6B at 365 kg. The top-spec airbag version, the GL1800DA tips the weighing scale at 383 kg. While the prominently decreased weight aids in performance, Honda has made changes to ensure the handling department is dealt in right.
At 55 mm shorter, the Gold Wing Tour stands at 2,575 mm in height but the bagger is almost identical to the current F6B. The Gold Wing and the Gold Wing Tour have similar wheelbase of 1,695 mm but they are narrower by 20 mm at 925 mm compared to the outgoing motorcycles. Chopping another 20 mm from conventional gearbox versions are the DCT models in width.
The electronically limited top speed in all variants is 180 kmph. The Gold Wing Tour is 15 mm shorter at a height of 1,640 mm and the wind screen can be electrically adjustable unlike the non-adjustable screen in the current version. With the comparatively shorter screen in ‘low’ position, the Gold Wing bagger is 1,340 mm tall.
The new engine is connected to either a six-speed manual or the third-generation seven-speed DCT automatic. The sixth gear gives a taller top end compared to the old five-speed box unit. It uses a new cam assist slipper clutch for improved shifting feel while Hill Start Assist and ABS system are also on offer. The DCT has two clutches: one for odd and the other for even gears besides Drive, Economy, Walking and Sport modes.
The modern super-tourer’s new aluminium twin beam frame is two kilograms lighter and has moved the new engine 40 mm further forward for more stability. The brand new front suspension, now electronically adjustable, uses a double wishbone setup with a central monoshock and a separate pair of steering rods. It is claimed to make new front end 30 percent smoother with no longer sliding friction from the fork tubes.
The expansive cockpit features slap bang in the middle of the new dashboard with seven-inch full-colour TFT screen that houses all the infotainment and necessary information like fuel, tyre pressure and riding mode are displayed on various little screens dotted either side of the clocks. The connectivity supports both Bluetooth and USB while iPhone users can now link with Apple CarPlay. The improved audio system has better clarity and passengers can control own music with buttons on the top of the pannier. The updated GPS system now has a gyrocompass helping to improve guidance even inside tunnels.
The new Gold Wing can be activated keylessly via fob and it can unlock the luggage too with the press of a button on it. The bottom half of the all-LED headlight uses five polishes lenses on each side to create Jewel-Eye low beam while at high beam the same LED pattern lighting makes a ‘stereoscopic impression’.
