Sporty Honda Civic Si Confirmed for LA Auto Show Premiere

New Honda Civic Type R 7

Honda Civic Si is expected to have increased performance over the standard model with aggressive exterior makeover

The tenth generation Honda Civic is going to get a Si sporty version soon as the long awaited model will make public debut at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. The Japanese manufacturer has not released much detail about the forthcoming variant but its launch in LA is confirmed along with more than 50 other new vehicles from different manufacturers.

It will be based on the recently revealed Civic hatchback and going by the fact that previous Si-badged versions were offered in both sedan and coupe avatars, we expect the new sporty model to come in two guises. In the regular Civic, the 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant is rated to produce a maximum power output of 174 horsepower and 220 Nm pf peak torque and that same engine is uprated to develop 190 hp in the 2017 CR-V. Expect the Civic Si to boast at least 30-40 hp more than the standard model.

Honda recently revealed the new-gen Civic and the near-production version of the Civic Type R prototype. The latter featured enhanced styling bits with smoked out LED headlamps, inlet hood scoop, wider air intakes, new carbon fibre made side skirts bringing an aggressive and sporty stance, performance tyres wrapped around 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, bloated prominent wheel arches, etc.

With a huge rear spoiler and signature tail lamp cluster of the Type R, the unusual triple exhaust system does induce a stealth character and brash look to the performance-based Civic. The titanium-like paintjob and diffuser further spruce up the overall appearance. It is expected to be powered by the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged VTEC tuned petrol engine from the existing car when it comes out next year or later.

The new Civic hatchback weighs 16 kilograms lighter courtesy of the high-efficiency joining techniques which made the car 52 percent stiffer when compared to the last generation model. It measures 4,497 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, 1,421 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. Comparatively, it is 130 mm longer, 20 mm lower and 30 mm wider with increased wheelbase of 30 mm. The Civic Si’s dimension will largely stay similar.
