
The all-electric PV market registered a domestic tally of 35,048 units in September 2026 as it led to a sales increase of 95.4 per cent over 17,932 units sold during the same period last year. The monthly volume also rose 10.3 per cent from 31,769 units in August. The top three positions went to Tata Motors, Mahindra and MG and these manufacturers accounted for 27,816 units during the month.
The market leader Tata Motors sold 14,792 electric cars – more than double the 7,369 units registered a year earlier. The company posted 100.7 per cent YoY growth and improved 7 per cent from its August volume of 13,825 units. The 42.2 per cent market share also placed Tata 7,010 units ahead of Mahindra. Tata offers an expansive range of zero-emission vehicles in India which helps bring in more consumers to its fold.
The second position belonged to Mahindra after the company sold 7,782 units last month – up 95.9 per cent from 3,973 units in September 2025. The homegrown company also improved 14 per cent from 6,827 units in August and secured 22.2 per cent market share. It has reached one lakh cumulative sales of INGLO platform based vehicles – XEV 9e, XEV 9S and BE 6. The gap to JSW MG stood at 2,540 units after the latter recorded 5,242 units and posted 9.1 per cent YoY growth.

The fourth position went to VinFast with 2,964 units as compared to only six units in September last year when the brand just got going in India. More importantly, its September sales also rose 32.4 per cent when compared to the previous month of August. The company captured 8.5 per cent market share placing it well ahead of Kia in fifth place.
The total of Kia reached 1,263 units last month as it helped more than double the 598 units registered a year ago and monthly sales surged 48.4 per cent from 851 units in August. Resultantly, the company held 3.6 per cent market share. At sixth position stood Maruti Suzuki as it sold 1,104 electric cars after recording 1,472 units in August which resulted in a 25 per cent MoM decline. It currently only sells the e Vitara.

The lower half of the ranking saw BYD recording a total of 836 units – up 14.2 per cent YoY and 47.4 per cent MoM. The sales total of Hyundai stood at 792 units – almost double the 404 units recorded a year earlier – but September sales fell 5.7 per cent from August. Toyota managed to reach 218 units with its Urban Cruiser Ebella and rose 29.8 per cent MoM while Citroen closed the top 10 with 55 units.
The leading trio accounted for 79.4 per cent of September electric car sales and Tata Motors controlled more than two-fifths of the market on its own. The first five brands contributed 32,043 units and held a combined 91.5 per cent share. The remaining five manufacturers accounted for only 3,005 units.
