A recent internet report has suggested that Nissan is working on a brand new Micra specifically for India and is based on the fifth generation model sold in global markets. We have been waiting to see that model come out for a long while now as it is a radical departure from the Micra known so far in the domestic market.
It has the capability to compete against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, recently facelifted Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo in the premium hatchback segment. However, as Nissan and Renault often do for the models sold in emerging markets, the upcoming Micra is expected to be based on the twin platform strategy.

The India-spec Micra is said to have compact dimensions but in the event of keeping the costs down, it will have less fancy underpinnings. More importantly, if the rumours are true, the next generation Micra will finally bring in the Japanese brand’s latest global design philosophy to India. It is pivotal considering that there have not been any substantial launches from the brand in recent times.

As for the powertrain, the existing options could be carried over as well. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine produces 76 bhp and 104 Nm while the 1.5-litre four-pot diesel develops 63 bhp and 160 Nm. Five-speed manual gearbox is standard across the range while the CVT is expected to continue in the upcoming Micra. With the competition growing, Nissan might uprate these engines on the all-new Micra.
