New 420 cc BMW F 450 R naked streetfighter gets 43 Nm, three ride modes, 6.5-inch TFT, Brembo front brake and optional Easy Ride Clutch

BMW Motorrad has revealed the new F 450 R as a road-based member of its 450 range. The naked offering uses a 420 cc parallel-twin engine that kicks out a maximum power of 48 hp at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm of peak torque at 6,750 rpm. BMW says 80 per cent of the available torque arrives at 3,000 rpm. Ready-to-ride weight stands at 175 kg which places the motorcycle in the 48 hp A2 category with a low overall mass.

The engine first appeared on the F 450 GS but receives road-specific tuning for the F 450 R and is expected to arrive in India sometime early next year. BMW uses a 135-degree crankpin offset and a balance shaft, and the motor works with a 6-speed gearbox and X-ring chain drive. Fuel consumption stands at 3.8 litres per 100 km. The 14-litre tank gives the motorcycle a claimed range of more than 350 km and the service interval stands at 10,000 km.

In addition, Rain, Road and Dynamic ride modes come standard. The electronics package also comprises ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control and engine drag torque control. Riding Modes Pro adds a configurable Dynamic Pro mode on selected versions. Meanwhile, Shift Assistant Pro supports clutchless upshifts and downshifts on every variant except the Base where it can be added later.

BMW also offers Easy Ride Clutch as part of the ‘Innovation Package’ on the top version. The system operates the clutch according to engine speed and works with Shift Assistant Pro. Manual clutch input stays available through the lever. BMW says the system reduces clutch operation during low-speed riding and gear changes without removing direct rider control.

The chassis uses a tubular steel space frame with the engine as a load-bearing element. A 43 mm KYB upside-down fork handles the front and the Sport Suspension version adds adjustable compression and rebound damping. The rear gets a hollow-cast aluminium double-sided swingarm and KYB monoshock with adjustable preload and rebound. Moreover, cast aluminium 17-inch wheels use 110/70 front and 150/60 rear tubeless tyres.

Braking duties are performed by a 310 mm front disc with a Brembo four-piston monobloc caliper and a 240 mm rear disc with a ByBre single-piston caliper supported by a dual-channel ABS system. Seat height of the BMW F 450 R stands at 790 mm and an optional Sport seat raises it by 20 mm and a low seat reduces it by 15 mm. BMW also fits forged aluminium foot controls and a reversible shift pattern for occasional track riding.

A 6.5-inch TFT comes standard with navigation, calls and music functions. M Sport versions add Sport display layouts with DTC, braking force, lean angle and lap timer information. Full LED lighting, heated grips and a USB-C port are also standard in the new motorcycle. The range consists of Base, Exclusive, M Sport and M Sport with Innovation Package variants with the latter adding Easy Ride Clutch.
