Hyundai and Kia are set to enter the hybrid market with new vehicles in India, and SUVs are expected to play a central role. The upcoming products include the next-generation Hyundai Creta Hybrid, Kia Seltos Hybrid, a larger Hyundai three-row SUV and the Kia Carnival Hybrid.
The plans reflect a shift towards strong-hybrid technology as automakers look to improve fuel efficiency without depending entirely on charging infrastructure. However, the launch timelines differ, and not every model has received an official India launch confirmation.
The next-generation Hyundai Creta is expected to arrive with a strong-hybrid powertrain in addition to its existing petrol and diesel options. According to reports, the SUV will use a hybridised version of Hyundai’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
The new Creta is expected to share its hybrid technology with the next-generation Kia Seltos. It will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and other upcoming hybrid SUVs. Hyundai has confirmed that a next-generation Creta is planned for India before 2030. However, the hybrid variant’s precise launch date and India-specific specifications have not been officially announced.

Kia showcased the Seltos Hybrid at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, with an India launch expected in 2027. The hybrid will join the petrol and diesel versions of the midsize SUV. The global model features a 1.6-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain with a combined output of 178 hp. However, the powertrain and specifications for India have not been confirmed, so the global figures should not be treated as final India-spec details.
Hyundai is also working on a larger three-row SUV positioned between the Alcazar and Tucson. The model, reportedly being developed under the codename Ni1i, is expected to expand the company’s presence in the premium family SUV segment.
A strong-hybrid powertrain is a possibility, but Hyundai has not officially confirmed the model’s name, engine specifications or launch date. It could eventually compete with other three-row SUVs, including the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari.

After the launch of the Kia Sorento Hybrid, Kia has included the Carnival Hybrid in its India electrification roadmap through 2030. Pre-bookings are already open for the hybrid MPV with the launch to happen soon. The Carnival Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre turbo-GDi petrol engine paired with an electric motor.
Kia has outlined plans to expand its Indian portfolio to 10 models, with eight electrified vehicles. The strategy includes hybrid and electric vehicles rather than hybrids alone.
