The recently launched Hyundai Bayon, the South Korean automaker’s second mid-size SUV in our market, is only available with a petrol engine. However, it will soon also be available in a bi-fuel petrol-CNG variant. Spy shots have revealed that road-testing of the new powertrain variant is underway, and quite possibly in the final phase.
Hyundai has confirmed that it will launch the Bayon CNG in India in January 2027. This will make the Bayon the company’s first model longer than 4,000 mm to offer a factory-fitted CNG engine. The South Korean automaker hasn’t shared the technical information, but media reports have already talked about some details.
The Hyundai Bayon CNG is likely to have a modified version of the petrol variant’s engine under the hood. The latter uses the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder multi-point fuel-injection engine as the Creta, tuned to produce 84.4 kW (113 bhp) at 6,300 rpm and 143.8 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm.

The power and torque delivered by the 1.5-litre engine in CNG mode are likely to be lower than when running on petrol. While the Bayon is available with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and a CVT option, the Bayon CNG may only be offered with the former. A dedicated switch located near the engine start/stop button on the dashboard should allow the driver to switch between CNG and petrol modes.
The Hyundai Bayon CNG will likely feature an underbody CNG tank, which should ensure the boot space remains unchanged from the petrol variant – 505 litres. The downside of this layout could be the absence of a spare wheel. While Hyundai equips the base trim of the Bayon with a tyre mobility kit and all other trims with a 15-inch spare wheel, it may only offer the former across the Bayon CNG line-up.

Hyundai will likely offer the Bayon CNG in several trims, targeting both customers with a low budget and those ready to pay a premium for all the bells and whistles. We expect prices to start at around INR 11.20 lakh (ex-showroom). For reference, the petrol-powered Bayon’s prices range from Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom) to Rs. 18.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The Bayon CNG will compete with Maruti Suzuki’s Victoris CNG, which costs Rs. 11.55-14.67 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the trim.
