Hyundai Announces Usage-Based Insurance, Save Up To 15% On Own Damage Premium

The new Bluelink insurance option assesses three months of driving behaviour and offers potential renewal discounts for eligible Hyundai owners

Hyundai Motor India has introduced a way for eligible Bluelink users to reduce the own-damage portion of their motor insurance renewal premium according to how they drive. The usage-based insurance option, announced on November 5, 2026, can offer savings of up to 15 per cent, subject to the insurer’s assessment. Customers can check their eligibility when their existing policy approaches renewal.

The 15 per cent figure applies only to the own-damage portion, not the entire insurance bill. If that component costs Rs. 10,000, the maximum advertised reduction would be Rs. 1,500 on that amount. Third-party liability charges and other policy costs do not qualify for the same percentage reduction. The insurer decides the actual concession according to its underwriting rules. The example is illustrative and does not indicate the premium payable on a particular Hyundai model.

The option is available to qualifying Hyundai vehicles that have Bluelink connectivity when their insurance renewal falls within the next 90 days. Drivers can view their score in the Bluelink application before deciding whether to share it. Hyundai India Insurance Broking acts as the intermediary between vehicle owners and participating insurance companies. The broker transfers customer-approved scores to insurers for renewal quotations and participation requires customer consent.

The driving score is based on vehicle activity recorded over the preceding three months. Rapid acceleration, abrupt deceleration, hard braking, speed control, and idling behaviour influence the assessment. Bluelink collects the information directly from the car and insurers can then consider observed driving habits alongside their other pricing criteria when assessing renewal premiums.

The qualifying score threshold begins at 70. Drivers who achieve 70 or more may become eligible for a concession, but a qualifying score does not automatically secure the maximum 15 per cent reduction. The Bluelink app also offers personalised advice to drivers below the threshold. Owners can use the feedback to improve their driving habits before another renewal assessment. The actual incentive depends on the insurance partner and its policy conditions.

Hyundai says more than eight lakh connected cars are already on Indian roads. The manufacturer targets 10 lakh cumulative connected-car sales by 2027 and 20 lakh by 2030. The growing number of Bluelink-equipped vehicles creates a substantial potential customer base for insurance offers based on driving behaviour. However, connectivity alone does not establish eligibility, as the renewal window, customer consent, and insurer requirements also determine access.

The quoted percentage is only one consideration when comparing insurance renewals. An own-damage discount does not necessarily produce the cheapest overall policy if other charges or terms differ. Customers should examine the total premium, insured declared value, deductibles, and protection offered before choosing a policy. Two insurance quotations can have different final amounts even when one carries a driving-score concession. The Bluelink service offers another insurance quotation option, not a guaranteed reduction for every connected-car owner.
