Ducati has brought the exclusive Formula 73 to India, priced at Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). The motorcycle celebrates the brand’s centenary year by revisiting one of its most significant models, the 1973 750 Super Sport Desmo, while combining its retro-inspired design with modern electronics. The Formula 73 will be produced in a limited run of just 873 numbered units globally. Ducati has confirmed that the Indian allocation has already been sold out, and bookings are no longer open.
The Formula 73 takes inspiration from the 750 Super Sport Desmo, which was the first Ducati road motorcycle to feature a desmodromic valve timing system. The original model followed Ducati’s victory at the 1972 200 Miglia di Imola, where Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari raced the 750 Imola Desmo to victory. The new motorcycle carries that heritage into a contemporary cafe racer design. Its silver and aqua-green paint scheme draws from the original model, while a vertical gold stripe on the fuel tank references the unpainted strip used on the historic race bike to check fuel levels.
Clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors and a short, tapered fairing and tail give it a distinctive silhouette. The aqua-green steel trellis frame adds to the visual connection with Ducati’s past. The Formula 73 also gets billet aluminium components, including the brake and clutch levers and footpegs, along with a Rizoma fuel cap as standard. Each motorcycle carries its name and serial number on the steering plate and comes with a certificate of authenticity, historical photographs and design sketches in a special box.

Power comes from an 803 cc, air-cooled Desmodue L-twin engine with two valves per cylinder and desmodromic valve actuation. It produces 73 hp at 8,250 rpm and 65.2 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. The engine complies with Euro 5+ emission standards and is paired with a ride-by-wire throttle. The exhaust system has been developed with Termignoni, with a model-specific design and a type-approved silencer.
The motorcycle uses a steel trellis frame, a 41mm upside-down KYB front fork and a preload-adjustable KYB rear shock. Braking is handled by a 330 mm front disc with a four-piston radial Brembo calliper. It rides on 17-inch spoked wheels shod with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres, measuring 120/70 at the front and 180/55 at the rear. Its wet weight, without fuel, stands at 183kg.

Despite its old-school appearance, the Formula 73 gets a comprehensive electronic package supported by an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Features include cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, power modes and Ducati Quick Shift. The motorcycle offers Sport and Road riding modes, along with a 4.3-inch full-TFT instrument display. Full-LED lighting, daytime running lights and self-cancelling turn indicators are also part of the standard equipment. Ducati lists an anti-theft system, heated grips, the Ducati Multimedia System and turn-by-turn navigation among the available accessories.
