D9 luxury MPV and Z9 GT are expected to lead the brand’s entry as BYD looks to move into a much higher price bracket

Denza is set to enter India as BYD prepares to consolidate into the premium and luxury vehicle market. The brand is slotted above BYD’s Dynasty and Ocean ranges globally and below the ultra-luxury Yangwang marque within the group. Initial India plans are expected to centre on imported models as the D9 luxury MPV and Z9 GT are among the products linked to the initial launch phase.

The brand traces its roots to 2010 when BYD and Daimler created Denza as a 50:50 joint venture. The Denza name arrived in 2012 with BYD supplying battery and electric vehicle expertise and Daimler contributing automotive development knowledge. BYD later increased its stake and completed full ownership in September 2024. Denza now operates as a wholly owned BYD brand with EV and plug-in hybrid products across MPVs, SUVs and GT segments.

The D9 is expected to become one of the first Denza models for India. The international-spec electric MPV measures 5,250 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width and 1,920 mm in height with a 3,110 mm wheelbase. A 103.36 kWh battery powers the electrified versions. The single motor derivatives offer up to 520 km of WLTP range and dual e-motor AWD versions are rated at up to 480 km. DC charging reaches about 200 kW on global models.

The Z9 GT is part of the more powerful side of the Denza range. It uses BYD’s e3 intelligent vehicle control platform and is sold in rear-wheel-drive EV, tri-motor AWD EV and plug-in hybrid configurations in China. The top electric derivative has been reported with around 1,140 hp. It also features second generation Blade Battery technology and high-speed charging tech.

Denza also sells the N7, N8, N8L and N9 SUVs in China along with the Z electric sports car. The brand sold 1,57,134 vehicles in 2025 and crossed the 5 lakh production mark in May 2026. June became its first month posting above 20,000 sales with 20,352 units recorded across the D9, Z9, N8L and N9 ranges. It must be noted that international expansion has already taken Denza into Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Latin America.

The D9 and Z9 GT feature in several overseas markets and selected countries also sell the B5 under Denza branding. The Denza brand has been teased heralding its arrival very soon – mostly around this festive season – and the D9 is expected to cost around Rs. 80 lakh to Rs. 1 crore while the Z9 GT could be sold for over Rs. 1.20 crore.

The India launch would give BYD a separate luxury marque for products positioned well above its current portfolio. The D9 would enter the premium MPV space against the MG M9 with the Toyota Vellfire, Kia Carnival and Lexus LM also are potential rivals. The Z9 GT, on the other hand, will add an electric flagship fastback to the range.
