Volkswagen’s recent global strategy has so much to do with SUVs and crossovers and at the 2018 New York Auto Show a new five-seater concept of the Atlas has been unveiled. Known as the Atlas Cross Sport Concept, it is a close-to-production take on a compact SUV that will enter international markets like US next year.
It is based on the existing Atlas that accommodates seven occupants but due to its compact nature, the concept has a much sportier design. It has a distinctive front fascia with LED headlamps, and since VW could play around with dimensions it has a sloping roofline, raked windshield and well-aligned pillars.

The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Concept measures about 4,846 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width and has a height of 1,734 mm – making it 44 mm narrower and 190 mm shorter in length. However, despite the removal of two seats, the concept is 140 mm wider than the standard Atlas.

It features a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with proximity sensors for gesture control, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and another display for operating climate control, heat and ventilated seat functions. The dual-tone cabin has plenty of metallic accents with brushed aluminium trim and piano black surfaces.
The combined power output is rated at 355 horsepower and the concept is claimed to run up to 42 km on electric mode. It has a top speed of 209 kmph and 0-96 kmph is achieved in 5.4 seconds. Volkswagen could introduce a smaller battery pack in the production version with 310 hp combined power output.
