Suzuki Hayabusa which is a superbike priced very high compared to Versys X-300 sells more units in a single month as the tourer’s premium pricing is blamed

The demand for adventure motorcycles is increasing in India as most of the premium manufacturers had already introduced adventure versions and they are selling in good numbers. Indian market is very price sensitive, sometimes the product might be really good but manufacturers price them really high which makes them not affordable and eventually it becomes a failure in the market.

This same thing is happening for most of the entry level Kawasaki bikes in India. Kawasaki officially launched the Versys X-300 in India late last year and it was one of the most awaited products from the Japanese manufacturer as it is a proper adventure tourer. But Kawasaki decided to price the Versys X-300 at a hefty Rs. 4.60 lakh (Ex-Showroom).

When the company announced the prices, everyone was sure that it won’t sell well and if we take a look at sales chart of last six months, Kawasaki has sold just two units till now. Suzuki Hayabusa which is a superbike priced very high compared to Versys X-300 sell more units in a single month. The premium pricing from Kawasaki almost seems to have killed a very good product.

The story doesn’t end their as the Japanese manufactured introduced Ninja 400 in India and again it is priced at 4.69 lakh (Ex-Showroom). Globally, Ninja 400 is the replacement of Ninja 300 or in some markets they sell both these bikes and the new model is priced at a small premium. But in India, they priced Ninja 400 at a premium of Rs. 1.09 lakh over Ninja 300 which itself is over priced.

Yamaha re-introduced BSIV R3 with ABS and stickier Metzeler tyres in India which still cost Rs. 12,000 less than the Kawasaki Ninja 300. The Ninja 300, Ninja 400 and Versys X-300 are assembled in India so they can’t justify the price as it’s a CKD model. The only reason for this pricing is that it is a premium brand. Kawasaki ended its partnership with Bajaj in India, so they don’t have to share revenue also.

But the paradox is Kawasaki also knows how to price some of their bikes really well in India. We just have to look at the premium models like Ninja 1000 and Z9000 of the Japanese manufacturer which are priced really well against competitors and they are selling in good numbers. The Versys 650 has also been competitively priced and people could buy it instead of Ninja 400 at almost negligible price difference.
