BMW Motorrad is planning to expand its portfolio by catering to sub 500 cc segments in emerging countries. The company signed a partnership with TVS to develop and manufacturer new entry level bikes. The new partnership was important for both companies as KTM-Bajaj collaboration became a huge success around the world.
BMW and TVS targeted two different types of customers as the German manufacturer would keep the premium position while TVS would focus on mass market. The first product developed by two companies were BMW G310R and G310GS which made its global debut in 2015. BMW handled engineering part of new product and production by TVS.

Even though there were some concerns about, whether TVS could match the quality of BMW or not, the final products were built to global standards of German manufacturer. The adventure bike segment was witnessing good growth in India and emerging markets thanks to the popularity nurtured by high end Triumph and Ducat advs.
The entry-level adventure bike based on G310 R was revealed at the 2016 EICMA. The G310GS became so popular around the world thanks to its design theme, which is similar to premium adventure bikes in BMW Motorrad portfolio. Even though these bikes were manufactured in India, the launch was delayed for domestic market as developed markets got preference.

The Apache and G310 cousins share lots of same components which include switch gear, brakes and wheels, and they are also manufactured in same plant. But TVS launched Apache RR 310 ahead of G310 brothers in India. BMW delayed the launch as they want to increase dealerships and service centres as G310 twins are much more affordable than other bikes in its portfolio.
The G310 twins are also powered by same engines but produce 34 hp of power at slightly lower 9,500 rpm and 28 Nm of torque at higher 7,500 rpm. The gearbox is same 6 speed unit. The difference between RR310 and G310GS are the looks, riding characteristics, suspension setup, wheelbase, turning circle and wheels.
